A midnight fire has destroyed part of a popular GSM market at the centre of Maiduguri, laying waste property worth millions of Naira.
It was gathered that the fire incident, which occurred on Friday night and raging till Saturday morning, razed about 14 shops and 40 adjoining stalls.
Traders in the area said the shops and stalls, torched in the inferno, were fully stocked with laptops, cellular phones and other accessories.
One of the shop owners, Malam Babagana Kashim, told journalists on Saturday at the market premises that they were told by the soldiers, stationed nearby, that the fire started late on Friday and continued till the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to him, the soldiers noticed the flame from within the market and immediately alerted the fire brigade officials.
Kashim said the soldiers contacted organisations within the town with fire fighting equipment and effort made to arrest the fire minimised the number of shops and stalls that were destroyed.
