Casillas: De Gea is ready for Real Madrid

The goalkeeper says he will stay at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, and insists he would welcome the challenge provided by his Manchester United counterpart.

Iker Casillas believes Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is ready to move to Real Madrid this summer.

Casillas has been heavily criticised by a section of the Madrid fans over the past couple of years and had been tipped to leave the club in the upcoming transfer window.

But he insists he will be staying put and that he would welcome the competition from De Gea, who is yet to sign an extension at Old Trafford and has been the subject of serious interest from the Spanish side.

Asked if he would continue at Madrid if De Gea arrives, he told Cadena Ser: "Why not? I would survive. I'm delighted with the competition.

"There's no clause in my contract which says I have to start, I have to compete and fight. I would like to finish my career here, to win titles.

"I think he can handle the pressure. No disrespect to Atletico Madrid, which is obviously a great club, but Manchester United are a bigger club, and I'm sure his time at United will have served as a wonderful experience.

"We have talked with the national team, we don't have a very close relationship but we have always got on really well. If he comes, David seems to be a really nice boy.

"As a goalkeeper it's clear, he has the future ahead of him. People are talking about David and others, if finally he comes he will be well received, we will help him, we will help each other in what we're lacking and we will have to compete like we compete in the national team."

Casillas also revealed that he has spoken with Madrid president Florentino Perez about goalkeepers at other clubs in the past.

"I don't remember who but I spoke to him about the ones that I like," he added. "It was a normal chat. I spoke to him about Sergio Asenjo, who's injured but is a great lad, or Sergio Rico at Sevilla."
