Nigeria’s former Heads of State have started gathering in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the Council of States meeting with the postponement of the 2015 general elections as top of the agenda.
They are expected to decide whether or not it is still convenient to hold the presidential election on February 14, 2015.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who has postponed his campaign rally to his home state of Bayelsa by a day, will be chairing the meeting, with former president, Olusegun Obasanjo and presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), retired General Muhammadu Buhari, expected to attend amongst others.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, is also expected to brief the Council on the readiness of the Commission to go ahead with the scheduled dates of the general elections or otherwise.
Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who decamped from the PDP to the APC alongside four other governors in 2013 and since then campaigned against the candidacy of the President, has also confirmed that he will be attending the meeting.
Gov. Amaechi, using his twitter account, said he will “attend the Council of State meeting” and “oppose any agenda to postpone the elections”.
The Council consists of the President, the Vice-President, all former Presidents or ex-Heads of State, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, all State Governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
