The National Human Rights Commission [NHRC] is calling on the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to defer its annual conference as its contribution to the current measures to control and manage the public health emergency caused by the presence of the Ebola Virus Disease [EVD] in Nigeria.
The NBA had scheduled its 2014 annual conference from August 24 to 29, in Owerri, Imo State.
With the prevailing public health emergency in Nigeria and the large turnout expected at the conference, the NHRC, in a statement released by its Chairman, Governing Council, Chidi Odinkalu, said that the most adequate precaution the NBA can take is to defer its 2014 annual conference, considering that Ebola is a virus in search of vectors.
On Friday August 8, the World Health Organisation [WHO] declared the current outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa, a public health emergency of international concern. A move that was echoed by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Among other control and prevention measures, both the WHO and the the Federal Government have since discouraged large gatherings during this emergency.
