The Nigerian Police has confirmed the death of at least four people in the bomb explosion at a filling station in Kano. Eight others were confirmed injured in the blast that occurred at about 10:00 a.m. on Monday. Monday, as well as Tuesday, was earlier declared public holiday to allow Nigerian Muslims joint their counterparts worldwide to celebrate the end of the Ramadan fast. The explosion occurred at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mega Filling Station at Hotoro Quarters along Maiduguri Road, Kano. The police said a suicide bomber, suspected to be female, “slipped into the crowd of citizens buying kerosene at the Station before detonating the explosives.” “The suicide bomber and three others have been confirmed dead, eight persons are injured and rushed to the Hospital,” the police said in a statement. The police explained that it was the security put in place at the station that prevented the situation from degenerating. “It is instructive to note that the Mega Station did not go ablaze due to the security barricade put in place by the policemen on duty at the station,” it said. “Such a situation would have clearly complicated the Emergency response.” The police said security forces have since cordoned the blast scene while police bomb experts are “sweeping” the area. The police advised residents to stay off the area and report suspicious movements to security forces; while investigations on the blast continue. Monday’s explosion occurs about 24 hours after another bomb explosion went off in a church at Sabon Gari area of Kano killing at least five worshippers. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the explosions, the major suspects are the Boko Haram who have carried out similar attacks in Kano and other states in Northern Nigeria in the past four years. Over 13,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced due to the activities of the insurgent group.
