Cape Town - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's wife, Grace, has reportedly accepted a nomination for the position of secretary of Zanu-PF's Women's League, marking her first move into frontline politics.
The Zimbabwean reported that Grace Mugabewas unanimously recommended by thousands of women at an event held to mark her birthday in Mashonaland Central province.
She will reportedly take over the reins of the league at the elective congress in December.
Concerns within Zanu-PF
The Cape Times reported on Monday that the role will make her a member of Zanu-PF's politburo, as various factions within the party debate who will be named as her husband's successor.
Grace Mugabe was described at the event as deserving of a political role, as she had stuck with her husband and remained strong, despite attacks from the paparazzi and the West.
Meanwhile, Newsday reported that the endorsement of Grace Mugabe has raised fears within Zanu-PF that this was part of her husband's plan to groom her to take over the presidency.
Party officials told the newspaper that they suspected Mugabe wanted his wife to succeed him to safeguard his business and family interests once he leaves active politics.
It could also be seen as an attempt to curb factionalism within the party. However, analysts told Newsday that Grace Mugabe lacked political clout and experience, and was unlikely to land the presidency.
