The self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mr Nnamdi Kanu threw caution to the wind when the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the Federal Government’s request to protect the identities of its witnesses in the case against him.
Justice Binta Nyako granted the request while delivering a ruling on an application by the prosecution to shield the names and addresses of the prosecution witnesses who are largely security operatives.
The judge ordered that that the witnesses use pseudo names and that such witnesses will be shielded with a screen which will be provided by the court.
She also ordered that the witnesses be shielded in such a way that the defendants and their counsel will be able to see them.
However, shortly after the ruling was handed down, Kanu and the three other defendants Mr Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, flared up telling their counsel in the open court that they were opposed to the court ruling and will not surrender themselves for trial.
A position that was re-echoed by their counsel and other pro-Biafra supporters.
Trial has been adjourned to the January 10,11 and 12, 2017.
