The Nigeria Police Force says it has made adequate provision for security in Abia State to ensure a peaceful local government election scheduled for December 21.
The Abia State Police Command Headquarters in Umuahia was a beehive of activities on Tuesday, as the personnel prepare for the council polls.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Oyebade Adeleye, told reporters that measures had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free and peaceful election.
According to him, the non-restriction of movement had made the command to beef up adequate security to all the perimeter where the election would be holding as well as all the polling booth to prevent any lynching.
He disclosed that all aides attached to any politicians had been withdrawn, as the personnel have been directed to exhibit professionalism.
To Prevent Any Lynching
Mr Adeleye assured Abians of security while urging them to partner with the police during the election by calling the numbers on the control room in case of any ugly incident.
He said: “What we have done is that the perimeter where the election would be holding would have adequate security and also in all the polling booth to prevent any lynching.
“The Safer Highways have been strategically stationed at the highways to ensure safety of commuters before, during and after the elections.
“Personnel have been posted to all the soft target to ensure that no ugly incident is recorded and we would be working with other sister agencies to share information and provide security.
“We have created an intensive patrol to cover all the nook and crannies of the state and all the rural areas where elections would be holding”.
According to him, police mobile men have been deployed to cover the collation centres at the local government headquarters alongside the personnel of counter terrorism unit.
“I can assure you that with the arrangement in place, I am very optimistic that we are going to exhibit all professionalism to ensure that we have a credible election.
“I want you to know that disciplinary measures have been put in place for any officer that would misbehave and I am not going to compromise on that, as I have urged them to conduct themselves properly,” the state police boss told reporters.
He further assured the residents that they had nothing to fear, as they go about to exercise their constitutional right, promising that the police will ensure peaceful and hitch free election.
