The Nigerian Air Force says it is investigating an alleged murder of a sixty year old civilian in Maiduguri by one of its personnel on Wednesday.
Reports say the man simply identified as Ibrahim Bulama was reportedly beaten to death by Air Force officers over a woman of easy virtue suspected to be their girlfriend at a red light area in Maiduguri city.
Giving an account of the incidence gathered from preliminary investigations, the Commander of the 105 Composite Group in Maiduguri, Air Commodore Charles Ohwo, told a press conference that the airman had left his beat after dismounting 10 p.m. and met some group of people around a corner near his accommodation.
“When they saw him they fled so he went towards there and was wondering why they were running.
“He entered a couple of rooms and saw a woman and before he knew what was happening he was attacked from behind, injured and they took away his rifle.
“He ran away from there and went for help he later reappeared with a colleague of his to secure his rifle and in the process we lost the old man,” he told reporters.
The airman, Lance Corporal Kamal Usman, who was injured in the encounter is receiving treatment in a military health facility chained to the bed and under heavy guard while his colleague whose name was not given but also took part in the scuffle that led to the death of the civilian is said to be in a guard room.
There are pictures of the murdered civilian in circulation, indicating deep cuts on his head and parts of his body.
The incidence happened in a hotel called “Okonna” in the metropolis. The hotel has since been shut down and the area cordoned off.
The airmen were serving under the 251 Battalion in the joint operations involving the army and police personnel.
