The Nigerian Air Force has trained a total of 185 of its airmen and women on air police counter-intelligence and special investigation to enhance their quality in operations.
It was a six months training held at the Ground Training command at the Air Force base in Kaduna State, north-west Nigeria to reposition the Nigerian Air Force into a highly professional disciplined force that will be effective, efficient and timely in the employment of airpower in response to the nation’s security imperatives.
Addressing the officers during their graduation ceremony at the Air Force base in Kaduna, the Air Secretary, NAF Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Abdul-wahab, urged the participants to make effective use of their knowledge during the training in their various specialties.
The Ground Training Command is saddled with the responsibility of churning out quality non-technical manpower for the Nigerian Air Force through robust and routine capacity training.
The airmen and airwomen were also trained in integrated basic clerical course and basic physical education course among others.
He said: “About six months ago, the integrated Basic Clerical Course was inaugurated while the senior non-commissioned officers’ leadership and management course, the Air Police Basic course, Air Police counter intelligence and special investigation courses were inaugurated three months later.
“Other courses that started three months ago that are graduating today are: Basic Military Band Course, Basic Physical Education and Physical fitness management courses.
“The objective of the basic courses is to impart basic skills and knowledge to enable the airmen and airwomen perform basic functions in their specialty. On the other hand, the upgrading and advance courses are meant to provide airmen/airwomen with higher skills and knowledge required to perform specialised functions in various NAF activities.
“In conducting these programmes, Ground Training Centre holds sacrosanct the policy of zero tolerance for substandard performance. From the beginning of last training cycle in January this year, the minimum pass mark for sundry courses was increased from 40 per cent to 50 per cent to ensure that only personnel with requisite capacity and work ethics are mustered as tradesmen in various non technical ground”.
According to him, out of the 185 students that were nominated for the eight courses, six of them representing about three per cent could not successfully complete the course due to poor performance.
He also told reporters that there was an appreciable increase in students’ performance in the first training cycle when compared with the performance in the training cycle of this year.
The Air Secretary, who highlighted the importance of capacity training to the service delivery of the Nigerian Air Force, tasked the graduands to see the completion of their courses as a challenge to do more in the quest for excellence.
He reminded them on the need to uphold discipline and high standard at all times which he observed that the Nigerian Air Force was known for.
“Having gone through the various courses, I am convinced that you have acquired the requisite skills for duties you would be assigned in due course.
“This naturally should fill you with a sense of pride and commitment, having proven yourselves trustworthy of the honour that is bestowed on you today. It is also pertinent for you to note that graduation day further avails you the opportunity for sober reflection, whereby you are expected to to redirect your attention to the anticipated challenges ahead.
“It must therefore be reiterated that the Nigerian Air Force has invested enormous resources to bring you to this level, and consequently requires you to put in your best. I charge you all to be innovative in applying all that you have learnt in your respective courses towards the actualisation of the CAS’ effort to reposition the Nigerian Airforce into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building initiatives for effective, efficient and timely employment of airpower in response to Nigeria’s security imperatives,” he added.
The Integrated Basic Clerical Course was inaugurated about six months ago to provide the airmen and airwomen of the Nigerian Air Force with higher skills required to perform specialised functions particularly now that the country is being confronted with several security challenges.
