Shiites Clash: Kaduna Police Remands 191 Suspects, Releases 83 Others

The Kaduna State Police Command has released 83 suspects that were arrested during the Zaria clash between the Nigerian Army and the Shiites movement.
Among the released detainees are 34 children and 49 women.
A statement by the Spokesman to the State Governor, Samuel Aruwan, said about 191 suspects have also been arrested for various offences, including obstruction of highways, possession of weapons and attacking security agents.
He said the suspects have been remanded in prison custody pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations, which may lead to charges filed against them at the State High Court or the Federal High court.
According to the statement, the Kaduna State Security Council has resolved that adequate security measures would be put in place across the state ahead of Maulud, Christmas and New Year festivities in the state.
The council advised citizens to continue to be law abiding and report to security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, any threat to the peace and stability of the State.
It also called on residents of Gyellesu in Zaria Local Government Area of the state that fled their homes following the incident on the December 12, to return to their homes, as security agencies have been permanently stationed in the community to provide adequate security for people living in the area.
