The Speaker of the House of Representatives says Nigeria must leverage on foreign organisations’ support to help develop the north-east region which has been devastated by terrorism.
At a meeting with a delegation from Bauchi State led by the State Deputy Governor, Mr Nuhu Gidado, the Speaker, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, said the north-east region, where he is from, was the most devastated of all the regions.
He emphasised that peace was needed in the region for effective development to take place.
“I want to challenge us, as leaders, to set out to achieve the needed peace for development to take place in that region.
“In the House of Representatives, under our watch as leaders here, I have started a discuss that I am prepared to lead that will call for international donor conference for the development of our region that is in dare need of reconstruction after the devastation occasioned by terrorism and insurgency,” Honourable Dogara stressed.
He further assured the delegation that he would lead the discussion on the north-east infrastructural needs on the floor of the House of Representatives.
“We will openly canvass these issues,” he said, pointing out that foreign support was needed in the re-development of the region.
“By the grace of God we are going to rain-in foreign value to aid in the development of that zone because in this days of dwindling revenue, there is no way the government will find enough revenue to re-develop that zone.
“So, we have to leverage on assistance that will come from abroad and we are not scared to put this matters on the front burner of national discuss,” the Speaker said.
A terrorist group, Boko Haram , has carried out series of attacks on communities in the region, killing thousands and forcing over one million persons to flee their homes.
