Some European Union envoys in Nigeria on Tuesday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take steps to cut down the rate of carbon monoxide emissions the country.
The envoys also restated the commitments of their countries to support Nigeria’s development, implementation and monitoring of its carbon reduction plan.
These were contained in a statement jointly issued by heads of five EU missions in the country to mark the Climate Change Diplomacy Day celebration.
The EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Michel Arion, his French counterpart, Denys Gauer and the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Torben Gettermann, signed the statement.
Andrew Pocock, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria and Michael Zenner, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, also signed the document.
Titled,” Climate Change: Facing the future together,” the envoys noted that in less than six months, their home governments would meet in Paris to seal a deal that would shape future commitments to dealing with climate change.
“The agreement which we hope to reach should be the most important milestone in tackling climate change since the Kyoto Protocol in 1997,” the envoys stated.
“The work to achieve that agreement has already begun, and it is up to us to ensure that we create the momentum needed to finish the job.
“June 17 is EU Climate Diplomacy Day, which gives us an important opportunity to reflect together on the magnitude of the global threat posed by climate change, the actions that different countries can take to tackle the problem, and how to increase public awareness.”
As representatives of European countries in Nigeria, the envoys said the celebration provided the opportunity for them to consider how Nigeria can respond to the threat of climate change and the assistance it may need.
