Two suspected cultists were killed, while 10 others sustained injuries, when two rival cult groups clashed at Nkpor community, near Onitsha, Anambra State, on Saturday.
Hassan Musa, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in-charge of Ogidi Divisional Police Headquarters, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with journalists.
Mr. Musa said before the joint team of mobile police officers and the Police Anti-Cult Squad could reach the scene, along the Nkpor-Obosi Road, two unidentified people were already killed.
He, however, said the bodies of the deceased were taken away by their cult members to avoid identification and possible trace by the police, saying the police was investigating the incident
An official of the Department of State Services, DSS, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the bloody clash occurred between the Aiye confraternity and their Akpa rival.
The source hinted that the timely intervention of the police at the scene, however, prevented the situation from further degeneration as rival groups fled for fear of being apprehended and identified.
“It is not possible to ascertain whether the deceased members and the injured ones were from only one cult group or from both sides.
“However, those whose members were killed ensured that they took their corpses away before the arrival of the Police Anti-cult Squad and Mobile police,’’ he said.
The cause of the clash was yet to be ascertained by the police, who are still investigating the incident.
