The National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the postponement of the elections neither favours nor hinders the preparations of the party or its candidates for the impending polls.
Addressing members of the press in Abuja, Mr Olisa Metuh said that the shift has not come without a cost to the party, but that the decision would be supported, as it is clearly a practical decision that has been made after careful deliberation.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to use this period to identify and eliminate all irregularities, so that the nation can truly have free, fair and credible elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced a shift in the general elections dates to March 28 and April 11, 2015.
The new schedule was announced on Saturday by the Chairman of the commission, Professor Attahiru Jega, after meetings with political stakeholders.
Professor Jega said that the commission’s decision was not influenced by any group or individuals.
However, Nigeria’s major opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has come down hard on the electoral umpire on the decision to postpone the polls.
The APC Chairman, John Oyegun, in a press statement, said that the decision is a major setback for Nigerian democracy.
Nevertheless, the party has also appealed to all Nigerians to remain calm and desist from violence and any activity which will compound what it termed an unfortunate development.
