The governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji, has denied tampering with the list of ad hoc of staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the February 28 governorship and other elections.
The candidates of some of the opposition parties had alleged that the governor, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, nominated INEC ad hoc staff thus setting the stage for the rigging of the elections.
They also said the state government influenced the appointment of election supervisors in all the 17 Local Government Areas.
However, at a press conference on Friday, the state Commissioner of Information, Anthony Agbazuere, said the allegations were not only “laughable,” but also a show of the level of ignorance of the opposition in the state.
According to him, Mr. Orji had no capacity to be with the ad hoc list as he was not a staff of the electoral body.
He said INEC ought to have complained to the police if the allegation was true since the idea of tampering with INEC list was a criminal offence.
Mr. Agbazuere described those who made the allegation as “drowning persons who are looking for what to hold on to and urged them to look for better things to say.”
On the alarm raised by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Alex Otti, that his life was being threatened, the commissioner explained that that there had been no case of political assassination in the state since May 2007 when Mr. Orji assumed office till date.
He said the governor was peace-loving and had no hand in threatening anyone.
Mr. Agbazuere described Mr. Otti’s action as “distractive,” and urged him to face his campaigns and learn the act of politicking.
