Suspected members of the Boko Haram sect have attacked Shani town in Borno state, Nigeria’s north eastern region.
Residents and military sources say the attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, threw bombs at houses.
Although residents claim that scores of people were killed, the police there have so far been unable to confirm the claims, as communications to the town has been largely cut off.
Residents who claimed to have been in hiding while the attack lasted, said the gunmen fired at fleeing residents after they hurled bombs at the houses.
There are also claims that the gunmen razed” the Shani Police Station and a telecoms mast.
Militants have already attacked the town twice this year, most recently in June when at least 11 people were killed and the office of the electoral commission was burnt.
