Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau on Thursday urged Nigerians to pray and work for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan next year as they celebrate this year’s Christmas.
Mr. Jang, who made the plea at a Christmas Service at COCIN Church in Du, Jos South, said Jonathan had done well and called on Nigerians to vote him again.
“Come out and vote for him, don’t just say amen because it is only when you vote that people of your choice will occupy the right positions.
“Again you can only challenge the leaders when they are going wrong if you voted for them.”
The governor said that very soon politicians would be traversing the nooks and corners of the state and the country in general in search of votes from the electorates.
He, however, called on politicians irrespective of their political parties to conduct themselves peacefully during the campaigns.
Mr. Jang also advised parents not to allow their children to be used as thugs to cause trouble during, before and after the electioneering period.
“To you the youth, don’t avail yourselves to be used by selfish politicians because those using you will never use their children,” he advised.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the way this year’s Christian pilgrimage to holy land was conducted.
“I spoke with those who have gone on holy pilgrimage to Israel and they said that everything was going on very well and they send their greetings,” he said.
Samuel Bwosh, the clergy who presided over the service, said that many people still have some misconceptions about the true meaning of Christmas.
Mr. Bwosh, who took his reading from the Gospel of Luke 2:4-20, said Christmas was becoming more secular than spiritual.
“To many, Christmas is all about spending money, commercialisation and greed; to others Christmas is a time to party, drink and eat,” he said.
According to him, Christmas is a time for giving, and a time for good tidings, adding that God gives his son to save mankind.
The cleric advised Christians to use the period of the good news of the birth of Christ to draw nearer to God and be saved.
