Draw for Champions League proper

The draw for the UEFA Champions League group stages took place in Monaco on Thursday, which paired holders Real Madrid with Borussia Dortmund for the second year running.

Los Blancos became the first team to successfully defend their title when they beat Juventus 4-1 in the final two months ago to be crowned European champions for a record 12th time.

Along with Dortmund, Zinedine Zidane's side will also face Tottenham and APOEL in Group H, while losing finalists Juve have been drawn against Barcelona, Olympiakos and Sporting CP in Group D.

Manchester United's reward for winning the Europa League is familiar opposition in Benfica and Basel, with CSKA Moscow making up Group A.

Premier League champions Chelsea will meet Atletico Madrid, Roma and Qarabag in Group C, while Manchester City are set to battle it out with Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Feyenoord in Group F.

Liverpool's return to the biggest stage in European football sees them take on Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Maribor in Group E.
