The Oyo State Government has announced the indefinite closure of the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, following an alleged violent protest by students over their welfare.
A statement by the state Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, conveyed the closure, in Ibadan, on Friday.
The statement directed students to vacate the school premises immediately, while law enforcement agents were enjoined to secure lives and government property on the college.
Olowofela said that the college would remain closed until normalcy returns.
The protests according to some lecturers in the school erupted after the staff unions of the institution had declared an indefinite strike action to press home their demands, chief among which was the issue of unpaid salaries of 10 months and arrears.
Several months back, the government had withdrawn subventions to tertiary institutions within the state mandating the governing councils and management of such institutions to look inwards for self-sustenance.
