The Nigeria Governors’ Forum on Wednesday held a meeting at the Presidential Villa in the nation’s capital, Abuja, with the State Chief Executives pledging to continue their Peer Review Mechanism.
In a communique read by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’aziz Yari, the governors welcomed their new colleague, the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello who joined the meeting after his swearing in.
They also resolved to improve collaboration with the Ministry of Solid Minerals to ensure the exploration of other natural resources in their individual states, as a way of further shifting the nation’s economy away from crude oil sales dependency.
With the peer review mechanism, the governors appraise the performance of each state’s government, with a view to finding better ways of increasing their revenues and performance.
The meeting started at about 9:00pm local time, with 13 governors and three Deputy Governors, including the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Zamfara State; Abdul’Aziz Yari in attendance.
Also at the meeting were Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State; Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State; Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole and the Governor of Oyo State; Abiola Ajimobi.
The meeting is in continuation of the forum’s Peer Review Programme.
Resource persons expected are the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais and former Minister of National Planning, Shamsuddeen Usman.
