The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Friday, July 17 as Eid el-Fitr day, putting an end to the annual Ramadan fast.
Nigerian Muslims will now join their counterparts around the world in festivities marking the end of the annual month of deprivation and spiritual rejuvenation.
With the pronouncement, Friday is now the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal 1436 AH.
In making the pronouncement, Sultan Abubakar said the new moon of Shawwal was sighted in 10 states of the federation.
Mr. Abubakar enumerated the states to include Kano, Borno, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Nasarawa Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi and Kebbi.
The sultan said the sightings of the new moon was reported by various Muslim leaders and organisations from across the country.
He said that the sighting of the new moon was duly verified and authenticated by the National Moon Sighting Committee and that of the Sultanate Council.
“Consequent upon this, tomorrow Friday, 17th day of July becomes the first day of Shawwal 1436 AH.and the day of the Eid el Fitr,” Mr. Abubakar said.
He called on the Muslim faithful to pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria and to continue to live in harmony with their fellow country men.
The Federal Government has already declared Friday and Monday as public holidays in Nigeria.
