The Blues are yet to taste defeat in 13 Premier League matches but their manager insists they are more motivated by trying to win the title than write themselves into history
Chelsea are not out to emulate Arsenal's legendary 'Invincibles' this season, boss Jose Mourinho insists.
The Blues enjoy a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League and are yet to taste defeat after 13 games, having already visited the Etihad Stadium, Old Trafford, Anfield and Goodison Park.
Their stellar start has led many to suggest Chelsea might be capable of going on to match the feat of Arsene Wenger's title-winning 2003-04 side and emerge unbeaten after 38 matches.
But Mourinho is adamant his players are not thinking about the possibility of making history and claims that a desire to remain undefeated could actually be harmful to their title ambitions.
"One thing is that I don't think it's possible [to remain undefeated]," he told reporters. "The other thing is we are not playing for that.
"If you play for that, if that is one objective, maybe you draw so many matches and you don't take risks to try and win matches. You are happy just to be undefeated.
"If you get 10 draws, you get 10 points. If you win five and lose five, you make 15 points. I'd prefer 15 points and lose some matches than 10 points and be undefeated.
"We don't focus on that - we don't. If we have a 0-0 with 20 minutes to go [against Spurs], we are not going to play for the 0-0 to be undefeated after 21 matches. No way.
"We are going to play matches to win. Sometimes, we will lose."
Chelsea are heavy favourites to claim their first Premier League title since 2010 but Mourinho insists his team are taking nothing for granted despite their blistering start to the campaign.
"We don't promise anything," he added. "We don't put ourselves in that position, of being arrogant to say we are going to win. We don't do that.
"All we say is we're playing very well, we believe in ourselves, we are happy with what we're doing. No more than that."
