The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has condemned the bomb blast at the Kano Central Mosque that killed dozens of people.
The CAN President, Ayo Oritsejafor, said this on Saturday at an interfaith meeting of Muslim and Christian leaders gathered to discuss the need for dialogue and cooperation.
On Friday, dozens of people were killed and hundreds more injured in multiple bomb attacks at the Central Mosque in Kano, were the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi, usually leads prayers.
Mr. Sanusi was, however, away in Saudi Arabia when the attacked occurred.
The CAN president said it was unfortunate that while some Nigerians were making efforts towards entrenching peace, others were indulging in drawing the road map to further destruction.
He said death by any means is saddening, but to learn almost on a daily basis about the death of hundreds of people in Nigeria is tormenting.
Mr. Oritsejafor said the Nigerian Christian community received the news of the explosion with shock and disbelief. He said it was most unfortunate given the number of people that lost their lives in their bid to offer prayers to God in the usual Friday worship.
“On behalf of the entire Christians community under the auspices of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), I wish to commiserate with the families of the victims especially those who lost their lives in the attack,” he said.
The cleric said the attack must be denounced by all Christians and Muslims since no God commissions the killing of a fellow being. He asked Nigerians, especially residents of areas most prone to attacks, not to succumb to the antics of the insurgents.
“We cannot continue to allow the terrorists to continue to intimidate us in our land because we have no other place to call our own, we must cooperate with relevant authorities in addition to being extra vigilant, to defeat this terror, they are human beings and can be defeated, but we have to be united,” he said.
He called on Nigerians to pray against terrorism and take other practical steps to defeat terror.
