New Delhi (CNN) At least 178 people have been killed in recent days by flooding across India, authorities said Tuesday.
The floods and heavy rains have affected an estimated 10 million people in both western and eastern India, said Kuldeep Dhatwalia, a spokesman for the Home Ministry.
In western states, 71 people have been killed in Gujarat, and 38 have died in Rajasthan, Dhatwalia said. In West Bengal, an eastern state that borders Bangladesh, 69 deaths have been reported, he said.
On Monday, an official in West Bengal told CNN that hundreds of thousands of people had been moved to relief camps.
Water from overflowing river dams is exacerbating the crisis, said Javed Ahmed Khan, the state's disaster management minister.
"We are still struggling to control the situation," he told CNN.
In Myanmar, another country in the region, heavy monsoon rains in the past month have left at least 47 people dead and displaced more than 150,000 others.
