Senior UN officials in Sudan asked to leave

aljazeera.com

Protest lodged against expulsions amid rising tensions between Khartoum government and peacekeeping mission in Darfur.

Sudan is reported to have ordered two senior UN officials to leave, amid tensions between Khartoum and the peacekeeping mission in the western Darfur region.
A UN spokesperson, who spoke on condition of anoymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said Ali Zaatari and Yvonne Helle were ordered to leave on Thursday.
Zaatari has been UN resident coordinator at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) while Helle worked as the UNDP's country director.
The UNDP and Sudanese foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment.
Stephane Dujarric, the UN spokesperson, said the UN had protested against the expulsions.
"The UN has filed a protest with the government of Sudan following their decision to request the departure of two senior UN officials from the country," he told the AFP news agency.
Dujarric said Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, "condemns" the move and urged Sudan to "immediately" reverse the decision and cooperate with UN entities in the country.
"The sanctioning of United Nations personnel sent to Sudan to carry out their duties in accordance with the United Nations Charter is unacceptable."
'Situation worsening'
The head of the UN peacekeeping forces said UNAMID was unlikely to bow to Sudan's request to leave when the situation there appears to be worsening, Reuters news agency reported.
It was unclear clear why the UN officials were asked to leave, or when they would have to exit the country. The UN staffer declined to provide further details.
Zaatari, a Jordanian national, had been in Sudan for nearly two years, and Helle, who is from the Netherlands, had spent about a year heading the UNDP's office in the country.
The expulsions come as Sudan's government is locked in a dispute with the hybrid UN-African union mission in Darfur known by its acronym UNAMID.
Ties between the two have frayed over Khartoum's anger at the mission's attempts to investigate a report that government troops raped 200 women and girls in a village in Darfur on October 31.
'Exit strategy' sought
Sudan demanded UNAMID form an "exit strategy" from Darfur, where they have been deployed since 2007, and ordered it to shut a human rights office in Khartoum last month.
Zaatari and Helle's expulsion are the latest in a string of incidents with foreign aid and humanitarian workers in Sudan.
In April, the government told the American chief of the UN Population Fund in Sudan to leave for "interfering" in internal affairs.
The UN and international NGOs provide aid to some of the areas of Sudan worst affected by the conflicts wracking its peripheries.
The government is battling an insurgency in Blue Nile and South Kordofan, as well as a protracted conflict in Darfur.
Ethnic rebels rebelled against Khartoum in 2003, complaining they were being marginalised, and in the intervening 11 years the UN says some 300,000 people have been killed and two million displaced.

Police Stop Bring Back Our Girls Protesters

channelstv.com
Men of the Nigerian Police, on Thursday, disrupted the street protest by members of the Bring Back Our Girls movement along the Shehu Shagari Way, Abuja.
The protesters had converged, distributing fliers to motorists and passers-by to remind them of the plight of the 219 Chibok school girls that are still being held captive by the Boko Haram sect.
They had intended to marh to the Presidential Villa but were stopped by policemen numbering about 20, who barricaded the road with their vehicles at the junction to the Presidential Villa.
The enraged protesters raised questions about the action of the Police as well as the efforts of the Federal Government at supporting Internally Displaced Persons and other victims of the insurgency.
They claimed that the Victim Support Fund initiative of President Jonathan should have yielded more notable results in the lives of the terror victims.

One of the Conveners of the movement, Oby Ezekwesili, also said that the Nigerian lawmakers should be “ashamed of themselves for going on break while the Chibok girls are with wicked men in the bush.”

Obanikoro Says PDP Primary Not Credible But We Must Move On

channelstv.com
Former Minister of State for Defence and PDP Lagos Governorship aspirant, Musiliu Obanikoro on Friday explained why he reconciled with the winner of the PDP Lagos governorship primaries, Jimi Agbaje, inspite of the party primary which was flawed, according to him.
We raised a valid argument on the need of the PDP “to have a process that is credible, transparent and believable – unfortunately, we didn’t have that” he said, which was why he had initiallydragged his party to court.
However, the Senator has turned a new leaf.
“There’s time to bicker and then there’s time to move on”, he said on Sunrise Daily, a few days after he made public his resolution to work with Agbaje, during a reconciliation meeting with Vice President Namadi Sambo, Jimi Agbaje, Peter Obi and some other party chieftains.
According to Obanikoro, “there must be a means to correct the past with a view to moving forward. Nobody lives in the past and wins” and that informed his decision to move on.
He also noted that the party leadership had given assurance that credible processes will be the order of the day in PDP henceforth.

He lauded the reunion, calling on politicians to emulate the same. “In our own polity where it seems politics is a do or die thing, I think what you saw there is a precedent that I believe politicians should embrace”.

Why PDP must go in 2015- Oshiomhole

premiumtimesng.com
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says Nigerians must reject the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, at all levels in next year’s general election, saying for as long as the PDP remains in power, Nigerians will remain in darkness.
Speaking Thursday when he received about 2,000 defectors from Oredo and Egor Local Government Areas of the state led by Festus Oviawe and Igbe Kingsley respectively, Mr. Oshiomhole said the choice before the people in the next election is very clear, a choice between darkness and change.
According to him, “in 16 years, Edo has gained nothing from the PDP besides the resurfacing of the Ofosu-Benin road and the attempt at the dualisation of the Okene-Benin road, with all its imperfections, which they were forced to embark on after we cried out that how could they dualise the road from Abuja and stop abruptly in Okene without extending it to Edo.
“In 16 years, after spending over $25 billion, yet we have no light. Now they have shared the electricity company to their friends and associates. For as long as they remain in power, Nigerians will remain in darkness. Our companies will remain shut and the economy will be subjected to the vagaries instability of the international oil market.”
Accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of abandoning Edo, Oshiomhole said: “he got 95% votes from Edo.
What has he done in Edo, what has he done in Benin City? The Queen Edo erosion was caused by the Federal Government and I have written several letters to them to come and fix their mess, yet they ignored us and gave money to Delta, and Kogi.
“See the newly refurbished airport in Benin, I was there and the roof was leaking during the rain. Is that the kind of government we still want in Nigeria, noway.
“For too long across Nigeria, PDP has buffeted us with untruth, lies, deceit, empty promises, both at the political level and economic front and every day they have run short of lies and they have run short of excuses.
“It is not possible for a he-goat to live long to become a sheep, it can’t become a ram, a he-goat will always be a he-goat. PDP can never change and I think you all will also agree that they themselves are aware that they need to change but the more they try to change, the more they remain the same.
“You know before my election in 2012, I remember they were shouting, ‘this is new PDP and I was saying what is new? The head is the same old PDP and it has become even older now, almost approaching a hundred. So the head has not changed and so the body couldn’t have changed but they know they have nothing to change.
“We will sweep PDP away from Abuja and the way we are repairing Edo, the way APC is repairing Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Imo, Ogun, Rivers and other APC states is the way we will repair Nigeria.”
Speaking to the decampees, Mr. Oshiomhole said “with you joining us, we are having a renewed encouragement and a renewed determination to even do more for the people.”
The leader of the decampees from Oredo Local Government Area and two-time aspirant to the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Oviawe said, “We are leaving PDP because of the injustice done to us and we have decided to join APC in the state”.
He said, “Let me thank the governor on behalf of my supporters for creating the enabling political space in the state for participatory democracy to strive. APC is not a party like our former party where if you don’t have someone behind you, you don’t have a businessman as a leader of the party to stand behind you to influence the election, even when you have your own personal money to do so, without having anybody behind you as your leader, you are not going to be nominated in any election at all.
“Unlike APC, we have seen you through the media where you went to Iyamoh and queued up to vote for the person of your choice whereas in PDP it was not so”.
Mr. Oviawe saluted the courage of the Comrade Governor in piloting the affairs of the state and the political maturity exhibited in spite of the provocation by opposition PDP Leaders in the state and promised to work with the Governor and APC to deliver Edo State in the next general election.

Insurgency: Sultan canvasses education for youth

premiumtimesng.com
The Sultan of Sokoto, SaƔd Abubakar, has advocated an unrestricted access to education for youth, to enhance peace, harmony and progress in Nigeria.
Mr. Abubakar gave the advice in a message to the opening of the 98th Islamic Vacation Course organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN, on Friday in Ibadan.
Represented by Dawud Noibi, the Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, the Sultan said unfettered access to education must remain the priority of any government, to ensure a brighter future for Nigerian youth and the country.
He also advised leaders in the country to always be guided in their actions by the fear of God.
Mr. Abubakar urged Muslims to remain patient in the face of the challenges facing the nation, reminding them of Allah’s saying that “every hardship comes with a relief”.
“I urge you all to stay away from evil company. Do not allow anyone to lure you into engaging in any kind of action that could compromise the security of the nation.
“As you are aware, our religion, Islam, stands for peace, so let’s remain peaceful, so that we may live a peaceful life here and be accommodated in the Home of Peace in the life to come,’’ he said.
The Sultan, who is also the President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, congratulated the MSSN for its educational programmes for the youth and prayed for its continued success.
Earlier, the National President of the Society, Sirajudeen Abdulazeez, called on Muslim students to join in salvaging the country from total collapse.
“We should stand up courageously and wrestle power from those ruling us recklessly,” he said. “We should be bold to tell those who are traumatising and threatening our future that come 2015 we will vote them out.”
Mr. Abdulazeez also urged all Muslims to obtain their voter cards and participate actively in the forthcoming general election.
In a remark, the MSSN B-Zone Coordinator, Mushafau Alaran, called on past leaders of the group to contribute towards the development of its permanent site.
Goodwill messages were received from representatives of the governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun States.
Over 10,000 students are participating in the 10-day vacation course which involves leadership training, lectures and seminar.

Aviation expert canvasses construction of maintenance facility at Lagos Airport

premiumtimesng.com
The President, Aviation Round Table, Dele Ore, on Thursday called for the construction of a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul, MRO, facility in Nigeria.
Mr. Ore said in Lagos that the country lacked the facility at airports and this was long overdue.
According to him, such facility, when in place, would reduce operating costs for domestic carriers whose planes were going overseas for major repairs.
“If the facility is established here, it will create jobs for the industry’s professionals,” he said.
Mr. Ore, a former director of the defunct Nigeria Airways, advised that to make the project viable, the facilitators must adopt measures to sustain patronage for the project.
“Maintenance facility in Nigeria is long overdue,” he said. “Government should facilitate the establishment of such a project to ensure that airlines have enough aircraft in their fleet and ensure profitability.
“If there are not enough aircraft to sustain the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, it can be a failure.
“Above all, there must be competence in fleet and aircraft type to make it work.
“One sure way of achieving this is the entrenchment of standardisation of fleet and line management to boost the competence of such a facility.”
Mr. Ore said that without standardisation of aircraft type, the industry could have issues with growth and development.
“This is because major aircraft repair facilities are driven by the development of competences in aircraft types,” he said.
“And most of the airlines in Nigeria do not have commonality of aircraft type to drive maintenance and repair overhaul facilities,.”

Commission advocates comprehensive campaign on contraceptives

premiumtimesng.com
The National Population Commission, NPC, has appealed to stakeholders in family planning and reproductive healthcare to bridge the gap between the knowledge of contraceptive and its usage.
The commission’s Chairman, Eze Duruiheoma (SAN), made the call in an interview on Thursday in Abuja.
He described family planning as a powerful tool to combat poverty and reduction of maternal mortality rate.
Analysing the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, NDHS, conducted by the commission, Mr. Duruiheoma noted that there was invaluable indicators on the health and living standard of the people.
The chairman, however, said that conducting a comprehensive advocacy on reproductive healthcare would help in availing the country with qualitative population that would contribute meaningfully to national development.
“2013 NDHS provides detail information on the levels and trends of fertility, family planning, maternal and child health and sexually transmitted infections, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, STD/HIV/AIDS, in the country,” he said. “It also gathered information on the measurement of the level of contraceptive knowledge and practice at the national and among the urban and rural population in the six geopolitical zones.
“Key findings indicate that knowledge of contraceptive is under spread. 80 per cent of women and 95 per cent of men reported of having knowledge about a contraceptive method.
“However, wide gap exist between knowledge and use with only 15 per cent of currently married women using a contraceptive method.
“This is an increase of only two per cent from 2003 and almost same with 2008 NDHS. 10 per cent of this group report using a modern method of contraceptive while unmet need of family planning among married women is currently 16 per cent.”
Mr. Duruiheoma assured Nigerians of the commission’s commitment to ensuring provision of accurate data on family planning, adding that it would also assist in bridging gap.
He described accurate data as central to the management of issues to improve the quality of life of the populace.
Family planning is a voluntary step taken by individuals to prevent, delay or achieve a pregnancy.
It also allow couples to anticipate and attain their desired number of children, spacing and time of their birth.

Clerics say Christmas not for merry making

premiumtimesng.com
Some clerics on Thursday urged Christians not to be carried away by merry making but that they should rather reflect on their lives, their neighbours and the nation.
The clerics spoke while delivering their sermons.
Kanu Uche, the Prelate, Methodist Church of Nigeria, said that the birth of Jesus was the inauguration of a new kingdom of righteousness and peace.
“(Jesus’) ministry was a clear advocacy for a new world, a new humanity and a new civilisation characterised by reconciliation, justice, sacrificial love, peace, solidarity and prosperity,” he said. “As we celebrate this yuletide, let us remember our brothers and sisters in distress and people living in volatile parts of our nation; let us continue to pray for peace and unity.”
Adebola Ademowo, the Dean Emeritus, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, urged Christians to turn to God in prayers for peace and progress to return to Nigeria.
“As we celebrate this yuletide, there is an urgent need for all to go back to God in prayers, the author of peace,”he said. “We should confess our sins, repent and pray to God to return our nation back to the era of peace and progress.”
The Dean Emeritus prayed that God, “who brought us this far to see this Christmas season would see us through to the New Year.”
He prayed that the season would usher for Nigerians new hopes and abundant blessings, adding that God would shower his love and protection especially our country Nigeria, so that we may unite in love and peaceful co-existence.
The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Adewale Martins, called on the National Assembly to re-examine and pass into law more relevant bills that would adequately protect Nigerian citizens against all forms of brutality.
Mr. Martins said that the call had become relevant in view of the many cases of assault reported.
He said it was worrisome that some law enforcement agents who had sworn to protect the lives and property of citizens, had allegedly turned against the very people they were meant to protect through acts of unwarranted brutality.
Femi Asiwaju, a former Vice President, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN,Lagos State chapter said Christmas was a time for reflection “by asking ourselves if we are truly living for God, and how we are affecting the wellbeing of this nation.”
Mr. Asiwaju said it was time for Nigerians to reflect and appreciate the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for salvation.
“Nigeria needs genuine Christians; not religious people,” he said. “It is therefore a moment of reflection and to reach out to our neighbours’ notwithstanding what they are worshiping or their religion.
“Christmas is a time for reconciliation. A time for Nigerians to put aside their differences, a time for those who are violent to put their violence aside and let peace reign because Jesus died a violent death so that we will live a peaceful life.”
Also Ishaq Akintola, the Director, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, in his Christmas message, urged Nigerians to love, tolerate and forgive one another for peaceful coexistence.
Mr. Akintola appealed to Nigerians to spend the yuletide period in praying for the return of peace to the nation.
He urged religious leaders to set good examples by closing ranks and by encouraging interfaith dialogue.
“MURIC prays for the safety and wellbeing of all adherents of the Christian faith before, during and after Christmas,” he said. “Nigerians should know that religion is expected to serve as a link among homo sapiens. It should therefore not divide us. Love is sine qua non as an ingredient of righteousness. Religion is therefore dry and incomplete where there is no love.”

Passengers stranded at Lagos airports over increased fares

premiumtimesng.com
Hundreds of passengers were on Thursday stranded at the two domestic Lagos airports over hike in fares by airline operators.
The operators capitalised on the Christmas rush to increase their fares.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the air ticket for an hour flight currently ranged from N30, 000 to N43, 000, depending on the carrier.
This was against N18, 000 to N30, 000 a few days ago.
Officials of some of the airlines said the rush for tickets was more pronounced on Lagos, Enugu, Abuja, Owerri, Calabar and Port Harcourt routes.
The carriers currently operating commercial services in the country are Arik Air, Aero Contractors, IRS Airlines, Med-View Air and Overland.
Findings at the Lagos airports as well as enquiries from airline representatives showed that the average fare on the Lagos-Enugu route, which was less than 45 minutes, was N35, 000 as against N20, 000 about two months ago.
Similarly, the Lagos-Abuja route attracted an average ticket price of N40, 000.
This was against an average of N24, 000 recorded some weeks ago.
On the Lagos-Port Harcourt and Lagos-Owerri routes, it costs between N38, 000 and N45, 000.
NAN recalls that, Yakubu Datti, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), had on December 11 advised Nigerians to make use of passenger service portals.
Mr. Datti said this was to help them plan their trips ahead in order to avoid last-minute stress.
He said the platforms empower passengers with tools to make the traveling experience seamless for them during periods when there is an upsurge in demand for air transports
Some of the passengers who spoke to NAN wondered why fares were always hiked during the festive periods.
Olumide Faleti, a traveller who was heading to Enugu from Abuja said: “It is funny how things operate here. This is a time to share and not to exploit your passengers.’’
According to him, domestic airlines should learn to introduce low cost promotional fares to attract travellers instead of exploiting passengers as a result of the season.
He regretted the dearth of local carriers in the sector, adding that, the few in the business were cashing on the development at the detriment of their customers.
Another passenger, Mayowa Olawale, said before now he had been searching for low cost fares online but could not get any.
“I’m on my way to Abuja where my parents reside. I searched on the Internet for promotional fares but was disappointed when I found out that all the carriers going my way had their ticket prices above N35, 000,” he said.
Meanwhile, some ticketing officers, who pleaded anonymity said that the difference in airfares when compared to what they used to be was normal at this period.
“It is normal for airfares to rise, especially during Christmas and as the year comes to an end. It is not only our airline that has increased fares,’’ he said.

Christmas: Abuja parks record low turnout amid security threat

premiumtimesng.com
Operators of recreational parks within the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Thursday complained of low patronage as Nigerians celebrate this year’s Christmas.
In separate interviews with News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja, the park operators attributed poor patronage to the current security challenge facing the country.
A NAN correspondent who visited some of the parks reports that there was lull in activities at the facilities in spite of the festive season.
Abdulatif Olausebikan, Head, Programmes and Events, FCTA Parks and Recreation Department, told NAN that the parks had provided numerous experiences for Nigerians during festive occasions.
Mr. Olaosebikan said the security situation in the country might have contributed to the low turnout of people at the parks.
He, however, advised Nigerians to be security conscious and support the Federal Government in the fight against insurgency for peace to reign supreme in the country.
“The parks and recreation department is collaborating with the Jabi Lake users to package some events basically for the festive season.
“But it is obvious that the turnout is a bit low and the only reason for this is the security situation report that we have gotten in the country.
“I will rather advise Nigerians not to panic but only be security conscious and support the government in its fight against insurgency,” he said.
A fun seeker in the park, Atinuke Ademola, expressed shock over recent security developments in parts of the country.
Mr. Ademola, who was out to celebrate with her family, however, attributed the low turnout to paucity of money to celebrate the Christmas.
“It is obvious that many civil servants are yet to be paid their salary and if this is so, how do you expect them to come out and celebrate with their family.
“Celebration is all about money and the government should fast track a means to pay this salary as there is still more time to celebrate because the New Year is still there,” she urged.
She further pleaded with Nigerians to know where to go and ensure vigilance in their movement.
On his part, Ifeanyi Uche, a banker, told NAN that the low patronage was due to the fact that many residents had travelled out of Abuja for the Christmas.
He also said the low turnout could be attributed to the fact that most people could decide to rest at home with their family for fear of attack.
Mr. Uche, however, expressed hope that the present security threat posed by the insurgency would soon become a thing of the past if only the government would act appropriately.
Jacobs Akin, Operations Manager, Assorted Foods and Integrated Park, Jabi, ascribed he low patronage on cash crunch.
He said despite the discount given to customers during the festive period, there was still low patronage.
He added that money would have been the barrier for most families not able to come out to celebrate.
Omololu Ibitayo, a 10-year-old girl, also told NAN that she was unable to get the best of the fun because most of her friends had travelled out of Abuja.
“My friends have travelled out of Abuja and most of them are not going to come back until after the 2015 election.
“One of my friends told me that her mother insisted they were not coming back until the election is over for fear that the Boko Haram might want to strike.
“Though I am also afraid, but I believe that God will keep those of us who are still around in this town,” she said.
She, however, urged government to end to the security challenge to enable Nigerians enjoy their lives.

PDP did a good job falsely branding Buhari an Islamic extremist – Osinbajo

premiumtimesng.com
The Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Yemi Osinbajo, Wednesday said the Islamic extremist tag hung on Muhammadu Buhari does not reflect his character.
At an interaction with young people, volunteers, and social media influencers in Lagos, Mr. Osinbajo blamed the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] for stamping that false identity on Mr. Buhari.
“The PDP did a good job in branding General Buhari as an Islamic extremist,” said Mr. Osinbajo, a professor of Law, noting that Mr. Buhari joined the Nigerian army at a time the military was filled with detribalized officers.
“During his time as a Head of State, he had more Christians in his cabinet than he had Muslims. He even gave his daughter in marriage to a Christian. Which Islamic extremist would even tolerate that.
“Buhari had full powers during his military era to make Nigeria join the Muslim Organization, OIC, but refused.”
On Tuesday, Mr. Buhari, the APC’s presidential candidate, had met with a similar group of young people in Lagos to discuss ideas and vision about the country’s future. On Monday, he had announced his entry into the social media space by garnering over 30,000 Twitter followers within 12 hours.
Wednesday’s meeting with Mr. Osinbajo began with the airing of a video reeling out grim statistics of the Nigerian situation.
“150 pregnant women die everyday. It’s like having a Boeing jet loaded with pregnant women crashing fatally everyday…,” the video began.
Mr. Osinbajo said the meeting was an avenue to discuss issues affecting the country, adding that 2015 presented an “incredible opportunity” for a change in Nigeria’s situation.
“No matter what side of the political divide you belong to, I know that everyone knows there is a need for change in practically every aspect of our lives in the society,” he said.
“The truth of the matter is that we have a unique opportunity now and in the less than 50 days to actually change the direction of this nation.
“I want us to focus our campaign, as much as possible, and in my discussions with General Buhari, let’s focus our campaigns on what we need to do to solve these problems.”
Mr. Osinbajo also said that with sincerity of purpose, the APC would resolve the problems facing the country.
“For me, I never ever imagined that a day would come when I might actually get an opportunity to do some of the things I’ve been troubled about – power, education, welfare for people, employment – I never thought that the day would come when I would actually be on a ticket that would win the election,” said Mr. Osinbajo.
“There have been so many criticisms, as far as I’m concerned what we need to do now is ‘what are the solutions?’ And that’s really my orientation.
“APC policies are directed at ensuring the welfare of the largest number of people. That’s opposed to a trickle down type of approach where you are saying we need to fix industries first and hopefully jobs will be created.
“We think there is a need for a direct intervention of government in ensuring the welfare of the people. And this is on account of years and years of neglect. We have a 110 million extremely poor people, we have a situation where 55,000 women die of maternal related ailments in one year.”
On the country’s dismal power situation, Mr. Osinbajo said the APC would adopt the Lagos model whereby small power plants are dedicated to specific communities, as opposed to the current grid method.
“The government model for power won’t gain fruits in 10-15 years, our approach will be to decentralize power to each states,” said Mr. Osinbajo.
“Smaller power plants dedicated to small areas will yield accessible electricity faster than the current centralized model.”

Christmas: Jang urges Nigerians to pray, work for Jonathan’s re-election

premiumtimesng.com
Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau on Thursday urged Nigerians to pray and work for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan next year as they celebrate this year’s Christmas.
Mr. Jang, who made the plea at a Christmas Service at COCIN Church in Du, Jos South, said Jonathan had done well and called on Nigerians to vote him again.
“Come out and vote for him, don’t just say amen because it is only when you vote that people of your choice will occupy the right positions.
“Again you can only challenge the leaders when they are going wrong if you voted for them.”
The governor said that very soon politicians would be traversing the nooks and corners of the state and the country in general in search of votes from the electorates.
He, however, called on politicians irrespective of their political parties to conduct themselves peacefully during the campaigns.
Mr. Jang also advised parents not to allow their children to be used as thugs to cause trouble during, before and after the electioneering period.
“To you the youth, don’t avail yourselves to be used by selfish politicians because those using you will never use their children,” he advised.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the way this year’s Christian pilgrimage to holy land was conducted.
“I spoke with those who have gone on holy pilgrimage to Israel and they said that everything was going on very well and they send their greetings,” he said.
Samuel Bwosh, the clergy who presided over the service, said that many people still have some misconceptions about the true meaning of Christmas.
Mr. Bwosh, who took his reading from the Gospel of Luke 2:4-20, said Christmas was becoming more secular than spiritual.
“To many, Christmas is all about spending money, commercialisation and greed; to others Christmas is a time to party, drink and eat,” he said.
According to him, Christmas is a time for giving, and a time for good tidings, adding that God gives his son to save mankind.
The cleric advised Christians to use the period of the good news of the birth of Christ to draw nearer to God and be saved.

Benue workers celebrate Christmas without salaries

premiumtimesng.com
Some government employees in Benue State said they were celebrating Christmas in high spirit in spite the state government’s failure to pay their salaries.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workers, who were being owed four months’ salaries, appeared to have shunned all grievances against the state government.
NAN also reports that the workers, however, accused the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, of trading their welfare for political reasons and other benefits.
“Comrade Simon Anchaver‘s leadership of the state NLC has shown clearly that it is not capable of fighting for workers’ welfare,” a teacher in Gboko Local Government Area said.
“First, Anchaver used NLC chairmanship position and the workers welfare to bargain for his 2015 governorship ambition which he eventually lost to Prince Terhemen Tarzoor.
“He contested election without resigning his appointment with the state Ministry of Agriculture because of his closeness to the governor.
“He does not have the interest of the workers at heart; all he does is look for ways of enriching himself and build his political career,” the teacher was quoted as saying.
The teacher, who pleaded anonymity, criticised the NLC leadership in the state for failing to support them at the expense of their personal ambitions, NAN reported.
“NLC in Benue has become a political party where only party issues are being discussed instead of the welfare of members.
“Can you imagine that the NLC chairman, on December 24 at about 4:00 pm, ordered all workers to embark on a three-day warning strike should the government fail to pay salaries?
“Anchaver declared strike when he knew very well that the Federal Government had declared December 25 and 26 as public holidays to mark the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
“We are tired of the situation and want the national body of the NLC to wade into the matter to enable us to get our monthly salaries.”
He also appealed to the national leadership to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to call Governor Gabriel Suswam to order.
Another teacher from Makurdi Local Government, who for fear of reprisal also preferred anonymity, berated the leadership of the NLC in Benue for failing to fight for workers’ rights.
She said that the NLC’s leadership had chosen to involve itself in politics thereby abandoning its primary responsibility of fighting for workers’ welfare.
Efforts to contact Comrade Anchaver proved abortive.
Benue State governor, Mr. Suswam, and 20 other Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governors donated N50 million each to the party last week.
At least a dozen of those governors made the donation despite owing their workers salaries and allowances for months. (NAN)

Ebola, World Cup, ASUP strike top google searches in Nigeria in 2014

premiumtimesng.com
Every day, we search. We want to find out more about our heroes, explore far-away destinations, or settle a dinner table dispute between friends. And sometimes we just search to find out what the latest trends are.
Google’s annual 14th Annual Year in Search is a look at 2014 through the collective eyes of the world on the web, offering a unique perspective on the year’s major events and hottest trends based on searches conducted in Nigeria.
As usual, we reflect on the people, places, moments and topics that sent Nigerians searching for answers during the course of the year. Like previous years ,this year’s list highlights some interesting, surprising and correlated trends. For example, in the wake of the kidnap of the kidnap of the 276 female students in the town of Chibok, “Bring back our Girls” became a top search query globally.
