The Yobe state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has given the outgoing governor of the state, Mr. Ibrahim Gaidam, the sole powers to anoint his successor ahead of the 2019 election.
The party’s members, at a meeting Thursday, agreed that the party’s candidate for the 2019 governor election would neither be chosen through direct or indirect primaries.
A communique issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the state deputy governor, Abubakar Aliyu, said Governor Gaidam would be allowed to single-handedly decide who will be the APC governorship candidate.
“The meeting … resolves that a discretion is given to HE Alh. (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam to present a competent and acceptable person as the Gubernatorial Flag bearer of our great party(APC) in the forthcoming 2019 general elections for our dear state,” said the deputy governor who chaired the meeting.
The Yobe APC leaders also granted the governor an unchallenged ticket to contest the Yobe East senatorial seat in the coming election.
Yobe East senatorial district is currently being occupied by a former governor of the state, Bukar-Abba Ibrahim, who was conspicuously absent at the meeting.
Mr Ibrahim has been occupying the senatorial seat since he left the governorship office in 2007.
Though it was not clear whether Mr Ibrahim has relinquished the seat to Mr Gaidam, his absence at the meeting suggested the might be a welcome one.
However, Mr. Ibrahim’s wife, Khadijat Bukar-Abba, who is the current minister of foreign affairs, was at the meeting.
The communique also indicated that the state’s leaders adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as their presidential candidate.
