The Yobe State Government has commenced the final phase of inspection and assessment of renovation, carried out on three selected schools across the state.
The assessment tour is to evaluate the performances of various contractors ahead of handing over of Government Secondary Schools in Fika, Yunusari and Gwio-Kura, which were ravaged by the insurgents; Boko Haram.
The rebuilding of schools is aimed at repositioning the education sector in the post insurgency period, with the Yobe Government pooling resources to ensure the rebuilding process of schools, communities come to fruition.
The school authorities and students in the rebuilt schools, delighted by the development say it will encourage teaching and learning again in a traumatized environment like Yobe.
A student of GSS Fika, Titus David told Channels Television that the State Government is doing all it can to encourage teaching and learning like it used to, be before the schools were ravaged.
“We are quite aware that government ventured into this projects to encourage teaching and learning again, in a traumatized state like ours and I want to assure them that we are encouraged by this magnanimity.
“We are going to study hard to justify that confidence Government has in us”
In November 2016, the Yobe State Government committed 890.4 million Naira for the construction of three schools, one in each of the senatorial zones of the state.
The principal of the school on his part said the renovation is a long awaited intervention, thanking the State Government for the project.
“We have long been expecting this renovation but thank God it came during the reign of Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, we are most grateful.
“This gesture will encourage us to work hard to uplift the standard of education in the state” the principal said.
Speaking after his assessment visit, the State Commissioner of Education Mohammed Lamin expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and assured that the contractors will complete the work before the expected date.
The commissioner said the state government is committed to repairing schools across the state, despite threats often posed by the Boko Haram insurgents.
“We were not deterred with the ceaseless attacks on schools by these militants as we were rebuilding despite their destruction and with the relative peace, we will continue to do to more to encourage teaching and learning in our schools.
“The attitudes of students and teachers of GSS Fika, who dared the Boko Haram attack on their school on the eve of NECO examination, went ahead to write the exams the next day encouraged us to award the rebuilding of the entire school” the commissioner said.
The GSS Fika was Established in 1993, with a population of 1,287 students which is expected to rise significantly with the rebuilding and reequipping of the school, a situation that will trigger high enrollment in the school.
