Deschamps: Rabiot has made a huge mistake

Livescores

Adrien Rabiot has made a "huge mistake" in asking to be removed from the standby list for France's World Cup squad, according to coach Didier Deschamps.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, who has six caps, was overlooked for the main 23-man selection, with Sevilla's Steven N'Zonzi preferred instead.

Rabiot - who previously demonstrated a reluctance to adopt a more deep-lying role for his country - was included among Les Bleus' group of first reserves for the tournament in Russia, but the 23-year-old made a request in writing to be de-selected.

Speaking at a media conference on Wednesday, shortly after the French Football Federation had expressed its surprise and disappointment at the move, Deschamps shed further light on the situation.

"It was not a letter sent, it was an email that arrived Monday late afternoon," he said. "I became aware of its content. Of course, Adrien signed it.

"I called him to have a confirmation that it was he who had sent this email. He did not answer me. I got confirmation from my manager. In the process, I warned my president of the content. I also warned the president of PSG because he is a PSG player.

"I was surprised of course. I can understand the disappointment, the immense disappointment, but to take such a position ... we are talking about a young player who for a while was in the French group. He excludes himself from the team.

"I dare to hope that through some decisions like this it will allow him to mature, to reflect. I am convinced that he made a huge mistake in taking such a position.

"He refuses his status as a reservist, to follow a program, and if there was a problem of being called as a substitute. It is his decision he assumes."

France are considered among the favourites to win the World Cup and must first negotiate a group that pits them against Australia, Peru and Denmark.

Ronaldo already a Real Madrid legend like Di Stefano - Nacho

Livescores

Cristiano Ronaldo is already a Real Madrid legend who should be considered an equal of the great Alfredo Di Stefano, says team-mate Nacho Fernandez.

Ronaldo and Madrid will seek to win the Champions League for the third year in a row when they face Premier League side Liverpool in Kiev on Saturday.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has already collected four Champions League titles, one of which was clinched at former club Manchester United.

And Nacho believes Ronaldo deserves to be thought of on a par with Di Stefano, whose goals fired Madrid to five European Cup crowns in a row.

"I do believe that Cristiano can already be equated with Di Stefano," Nacho told Goal. "Ronaldo is a legend, he is a spectacular player, with all the Ballons d'Or he's won. When the years go by surely people will value these things even more.

"If Real Madrid win this Champions League, we will make history. It would be historic. As a child you always dream of winning a Champions League. When you are facing the possibility of winning a fourth... imagine! It is unbelievable.

"When I leave football and dedicate myself to something else, I will look back and say, 'Oh my God, I got everything I wanted.' We are very excited to continue making history, we are facing a wonderful challenge and we arrive in the best possible shape.

"I've watched Liverpool a lot this year. The key is to be concentrated for the whole game against players as fast as those who Liverpool have in the front line, to live every minute of the final with maximum intensity, because you can be hurt at any time."

Some pundits have suggested Liverpool go into the final as the clear underdogs, but Spain international Nacho denies that will be the case.

"It's going to be a very complicated match." Nacho said. "When the ball starts rolling, there are no favourites.

"The game can change from one moment to the next and Liverpool have shown that, if you see what they have achieved on their road to the final, it is spectacular: the goals they have scored, how they have defended.

"They are a big club, who also have a great history, and it's going to make things difficult for us."

A run of five goals in his last four LaLiga appearances has made Gareth Bale's case for a place in Madrid's starting line-up for the final, with Nacho indicating speculation over the Wales international's future should stop.

"I think he's an extraordinary player," Nacho added. "He is also facing the possibility of winning four Champions Leagues in five years.

"I understand that in football everything is discussed and the best, the worst are classified... But I am sure that if Bale were in another team, Real Madrid would like to sign him."

Salah, Mane, Firmino trio could blow Madrid away, says Redknapp

Livescores

Liverpool have the firepower to 'blow Real Madrid away' in Saturday's Champions League final, according to ex-Anfield star Jamie Redknapp.

Jurgen Klopp's side will seek to prevent Madrid claiming a third consecutive European crown in Kiev, having turned in some stellar performances en route to the showpiece.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have scored 29 goals between them in this season's competition and Redknapp believes his old club have what it takes to overcome Zinedine Zidane's men in style.

"If Liverpool blew Real Madrid away, it wouldn't surprise me, it really wouldn't," the former England international told Omnisport.

"Because of the strikeforce they've got and sometimes the way that Real Madrid defend, they're an attacking defensive side. They don't really look at the defensive side of the game.

"It's not just Mo Salah. I think it would be disrespectful to not talk about Mo Salah, who's had an unbelievable season. If you look after Salah, Firmino will hurt you and it's the same with Mane.

"There's so many different options and I think for Liverpool to not miss [Philippe] Coutinho after selling him [to Barcelona] for so much money just shows how well the manager has done."

Robbie Fowler, another favourite on the Red half of Merseyside, is also hopeful Salah can be the man to make the difference.

"He's been fantastic," said Fowler, who scored 183 goals in 369 appearances for Liverpool.

"I don't think anyone could've foreseen what was going to happen, but he's been magnificent.

"He's got a big game, a big occasion, and he's proven this year that he is the man for the big occasion, so he's proven that he can do it.

"Fingers crossed he can do it in the Champions League final."

Salah not comparable to Ronaldo yet - Karius

Livescores

Mohamed Salah needs to produce his record-breaking season year after year to earn comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo, says Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius.

Salah's spectacular first campaign for the Reds after joining from Roma saw him set a new record for the most goals scored in a 38-game Premier League campaign.

The Egypt international also claimed a raft of individual prizes along with the Premier League Golden Boot, including Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year prizes.

Dejan Lovren has claimed Salah is "definitely" the best player in the world on current form as Liverpool prepare to face Madrid in Saturday's Champions League final in Kiev.

But, with the clash being billed by many as a battle between Salah and five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, Karius believes the Portugal star remains on another level.

"This season is unbelievable," Karius told Sky Germany. "He's of course in that region but the biggest difference is Ronaldo did this over so many years.

"It's too early to put Mo with him. I don't want to take anything away from Mo - he's world-class this season.

"But Ronaldo showed himself over so many years to be up there with the best, you have to prove it season over season.

"I hope he can do it. I wish he can do it. He's still really young and has a lot of space to improve even more."

Toure open to Manchester United switch & wants to play with Pogba

Livescores

Yaya Toure says he wants to play with Paul Pogba and would consider joining Manchester United after ending an eight-year spell at rivals Manchester City.

Toure is a free agent after wrapping up his third Premier League title at City, leaving the club at the age of 35.

The midfielder has stated his preference is to stay in the Premier League and suggested United is a possible move due to the retirement of Michael Carrick.

"Yeah he just left," Toure told the Manchester Evening News of the former England international. "Let's see, let's see.

"I don't rule big teams out. The big teams are very important for me. What they want to achieve, the way they want to go, for me is very important. I want to go somewhere I can win and achieve.

"It's going to be hard one day to play against City, but I have to do that. It is part of my job. I've been playing football for such a long time, I'm no good in the office or something else. I am good in football.

"To see myself at a different club is going to be difficult. I have been such a big part of City for such a long time now. I just want to say that definitely I will continue to play at a high level - Champions League or Europa League.

"I want to play two more years. They have to be in the higher level and then I can do something else."

Pogba's United future has been questioned as the France international appears to have an uneasy relationship with Jose Mourinho, who benched the midfielder for both legs of his side's Champions League exit to Sevilla, while he has regularly faced criticism in the media.

"I love Paul Pogba," Toure said. "I love Kevin [De Bruyne] as well and I love [David] Silva. Silva was my player. It is difficult because you have to be good on all things. Silva is short and strong.

"Pogba - it's difficult because of the way the media has treated him. We don't have the same characteristics because for me I was involved in all the ball, I ran everywhere. I liked that. I was prepared for that. I was working for that for a long time.

"When I was in the academy in Africa I had to run everywhere, get box to box in 50 seconds. It's something I've been loving to do.

"Pogba is the same size, power - but different in the way he wants to go. Technically as well, the ability to score goals as well. It is a player I want to play with, to be honest, just to teach him some things.

"Pogba is a great player. He's a fantastic player. He's a little bit young at the moment. Criticism is a part of life. If they criticise you it's because they want you to be good or be better."

Toure, however, accepts a move to United, having been such a large part of City's rise to the top in recent years, would be hugely controversial.

"No, no, no, no," Toure said when asked if he sees United as his next move. "The [City] fans are going to kill me!"

Europa League master, record return at PSG - Arsenal boss Emery in Opta numbers

Livescores

Unai Emery will look to fire Arsenal back into Premier League title contention after being named as Arsene Wenger's successor at Emirates Stadium.

The 46-year-old swept the board domestically at Paris Saint-Germain last season but moved on having failed to deliver Champions League success.

An initial aim at Arsenal will be restoring the north London club to Europe's top competition after a sixth-place finish last season, although Emery knows plenty about the Europa League.

With some help from Opta, we have a look through some of the key numbers racked up by the new Gunners head coach.

7 – Arsenal are the seventh club of Emery's coaching career. He started with Spanish minnows Lorca Deportiva and led Almeria, Valencia and Spartak Moscow before his reputation rose rapidly over the past five years.

2 – He is Arsenal's second non-British manager after Wenger and the ninth Spaniard appointed to a Premier League job.

1 – The Ligue 1 title this season was Emery's first ever league win after PSG finished second to Monaco last time around. Before moving to the French capital, back-to-back third-place finishes with Valencia in 2010-11 and 2011-12 represented his best league return.

2.37 – Emery averaged 2.37 points per game at PSG, with a Ligue 1 win ratio of 73.7 per cent. Both represent best marks in the club's history.

10 – Overall, Emery has won 10 major honours as a coach, spread across his spells with Sevilla and PSG. Only Laurent Blanc (11) won more domestic trophies at the French club.

3 – He led Sevilla to glory in three consecutive Europa League campaigns between 2013-14 and 2015-16 – an unprecedented feat.

15 – A record Emery will certainly need to improve is one of no win in 15 competitive attempts against Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho. Facing Manchester City's former Barcelona boss Guardiola, he has four draws and six defeats, while Mourinho has won four and drawn one of their previous meetings.

4-3-3 – Emery's preferred setup at PSG, where he used the formation in 89 per cent of matches. At Sevilla, he used a more conservative 4-2-3-1 in the majority of games.

Ref took Champions League final away from Roma - Under

Livescores

Cengiz Under feels refereeing decisions robbed Roma of a place in the Champions League final.

Liverpool take on reigning champions Real Madrid in Kiev on Saturday after coming through a remarkable semi-final against the Serie A side that finished 7-6 on aggregate.

Jurgen Klopp's men prevailed 5-2 at Anfield, having raced into a 5-0 lead, while a pair of late goals gave Roma a 4-2 win at the Stadio Olimpico in an eventful return fixture.

Roma sporting director Monchi called for VAR to be introduced in Champions League matches in the aftermath of a second leg where his club had two penalty claims dismissed, while president James Pallotta labelled the officiating "embarrassing" and "an absolute joke" - words that landed him with a UEFA charge.

In an interview with beIN Sports Turkey, Under explained he was similarly unimpressed by the efforts of Slovenian referee Damir Skomina as he and his team-mates tried in vain to repeat the comeback heroics that saw off Barcelona in the quarter-final.

"Liverpool started very well, they were quickly up 2-0 [in the first leg]," he said. "They were relentless and kept scoring.

"After 5-0, everyone was worried on our side. But they got tired as the game went on. In the last 15 minutes, we were dominant and scored two goals. If there were five minutes more, we could have scored a couple more.

"In Rome, there were two penalties which should have been given for us. I don’t want to criticise the referee, I’m only 20 years old but that’s the truth.

"I could have been in Kiev today. They took that away from us. That's my opinion."

Under struggled to make an impression in Eusebio Di Francesco's side during the first half of this season, after joining from Istanbul Basaksehir.

A burst of six goals in as many matches at the start of February kick-started his fledgling career in the Italian capital and the forward has Scudetto ambitions for 2018-19.

"I have a lot to do next season for Roma," he said. "During the first half of the season I had adaptation issues.

"But, at the winter break, I told myself that I was going to be a different Cengiz and I was a different Cengiz in the second half of the season. Scoring goals at consecutive games made me feel confident in myself."

Under added: "We want to end Juventus' streak. We can do it. This season, we have won important games, like the [4-2 victory] against Napoli.

"That game was in our total control. We reached the Champions League semi-finals. We have had a good season."

Benitez: Winning Champions League changed my life

Livescores

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said winning the Champions League with the club changed his life.

The Spaniard guided the club to a famous penalty shoot-out win over AC Milan in 2005 after they trailed 3-0 at half-time.

Thirteen years later and the memories of that night in Istanbul still live fresh in the memory of Benitez, who reflected on his time at Anfield.

"It changed my life in England," the Newcastle United manager told UK newspapers.

"To win the league with Valencia in Spain after 31 years changed my life. To win the UEFA Cup with Valencia changed my life, it changed everything.

"But to come to England and win the Champions League with a different team was massive.

"Maybe it will change everything for [Jurgen] Klopp in Liverpool. He's fine. He's an idol now, but he will be more than that."

Benitez is still lauded by Liverpool fans for his success, but believes the current squad – who face Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday – are stronger than the team he won the competition with.

"I think this one is better," he said. "We achieved what we achieved – we talk about the 'Miracle of Istanbul', but this team is better.

"We had Stevie [Gerrard], of course, also some players with experience and quality, [Xabi] Alonso and [Dietmar] Hamann. We had players who worked hard; we had a very good balance.

"This team also has good balance, but the front three can make a difference on their own."

Liverpool's run to the final in 2017-18 has thrilled many and Benitez insists they could go one step further and lift the trophy again.

"The difference between the Premier League and the other leagues is the intensity of the games," he said.

"Liverpool and their offensive players, their midfield and their defence have the intensity to hurt you if they do it well.

"Real Madrid has the experience and the quality to match them, but Liverpool can do it. They have the energy, the passion and the desire."

Owen surprised by Zidane success

Livescores

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward Michael Owen admits he is surprised by the success of Zinedine Zidane's transition into management.

Owen played for Madrid in the 2004-05 season alongside the former France captain, the Englishman scoring 16 times in 45 appearances.

A win against Liverpool in Kiev on Saturday would seal a third consecutive Champions League title for Zidane's Madrid, but Owen said he previously was not certain of his former team-mate's managerial credentials.

"He kept to himself. He's a lovely chap and when you talk to him, he's easy to talk to," he told Omnisport, speaking courtesy of Sports Tonight/Dubai Eye 103.8.

"But in general he had that demeanour in the dressing room when, if there's a few people laughing and joking, he'd be sat there just taking everything in and assessing the situation.

"So I didn't think that he'd be the one to do what a manager has to do and lead from the front."

Reflecting on his own time in the Spanish capital, Owen drew parallels between the two clubs and their history in Europe.

"When you put the shift on and you wear a certain badge, you do feel the history of the club," he said.

"If you're playing for Liverpool on a European night, you just know there's magic in the air, you've seen it and it gives you so much belief.

"I think it's similar with Real Madrid. As soon as you put that shirt on, you know the Champions League is where you need to be focusing on.

"They've got players that just come alive or know how to do it when they need to do it. You can't buy that experience."

Copa Libertadores Review: Silva helps Cruzeiro into last 16

Livescores

Lucas Silva helped Cruzeiro seal their spot in the Copa Libertadores last 16 with a 2-1 win over Racing Club Tuesday.

Silva added to Thiago Neves' early opener as Cruzeiro progressed from Group 5 courtesy of their win in Belo Horizonte.

Neves swept home a third-minute goal before the hosts doubled their lead through Silva, who is on loan from Real Madrid.

The 25-year-old won possession high up the pitch before firing in a fine effort from 25 yards.

Ricardo Centurion pulled a goal back for Racing in the 28th minute, but Cruzeiro saw out their win to finish top of the group.

Vasco da Gama finished third to enter the Copa Sudamericana after beating Universidad de Chile 2-0.

Madrid are linked to 50 players – Ronaldo laughs off Neymar rumours

Livescores

Cristiano Ronaldo laughed off reports linking Neymar to Real Madrid, saying the LaLiga giants were always at the centre of transfer speculation.

Neymar is linked with a switch to Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in the close-season despite only joining the Ligue 1 club in a world-record move last year.

But Madrid are reportedly interested in numerous players and that has not gone unnoticed by Ronaldo.

The Portugal international said his team ended up making few signings after all the speculation.

"At Madrid there is continually talk of signings," Ronaldo told El Chiringuito de Jugones.

"I have been here eight years and they are always talking about 50 players that are going to come and in the end none come.

"In September a lot of players are going to come and then in the end those who reach the finals are always the same."

Madrid are aiming to win a fourth Champions League in five seasons when they face Liverpool in the final Saturday.

Salah wouldn't improve Real Madrid – Del Bosque

Livescores

Former Spain coach Vicente del Bosque believes no Liverpool player would improve Real Madrid, not even Premier League Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah.

The two European giants meet in the Champions League final on Saturday with Madrid aiming to win a fourth title in five years.

Liverpool have scored 17 goals in six knockout matches on the road to Kiev, but speaking to Spanish radio, Del Bosque insists the 12-time winners will be superior to their English counterparts.

"Real Madrid has a great squad. They are the best club in Europe at the moment and must show that on Saturday," Del Bosque told COPE.

"I don't see one player who would improve Real Madrid, not even Salah."

Del Bosque, who twice won the Champions League as coach of Madrid, went on to predict a comfortable 4-1 win for the LaLiga giants.

Guzman called up as Romero replacement for Argentina

Livescores

Tigres UANL goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman has been called up to Argentina's World Cup squad as a replacement for Sergio Romero.

Romero, who was expected to be Argentina's number one, was ruled out of the World Cup Tuesday due to a knee injury.

The Manchester United goalkeeper was replaced by Guzman, the 32-year-old who has won six caps.

Chelsea's Willy Caballero and River Plate's Franco Armani are the other shot-stoppers in Jorge Sampaoli's squad.

Argentina will face Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria in Group D in Russia.

Klopp: Real Madrid have no weaknesses

Livescores

Jurgen Klopp does not believe Real Madrid have any weaknesses that could be exploited by Liverpool.

The teams meet on Saturday in the Champions League final, Madrid seeking to defend the title for the second year in a row.

Liverpool are the top-scoring team in the competition with 40 goals, while the six clean sheets recorded by Klopp's men is level with Barcelona as the joint-most this term.

But Madrid are considered by many to be favourites for the Kiev showpiece, with Klopp indicating his tactics will be more complicated than targeting left-back Marcelo with Mohamed Salah.

"You saw it, everybody saw it, seems obvious: 'Marcelo, what an offensive player, but... he can't defend'," Klopp said to The Mirror.

"They won the Champions League twice, they are again in the final! Bayern Munich thought they were the better team in the two games, but what is better at the end?

"Real need four chances to score twice. Bayern needed eight to score one. They are experienced from head to toe. There is no weakness.

"Football is not so easy that you can say, 'If Marcelo makes that run, and we leave Mo Salah there in that space, Salah gets in against Ramos'."

Klopp suggested Liverpool will have to show a killer instinct if they are to triumph against Madrid in the final.

"There are opportunities for us, we know that - and they know it as well," Klopp said.

"All the teams said it: against Juve, Real were lucky, against Bayern, they were lucky, but they are the third time in a row in the final, the fourth time in five years, so what does that say?

"Their experience prepares them for difficult situations, so we will cause them problems and they will cause us problems.

"And, in the end, we have to be there in the decisive moments, we have to score when we have the chances."

Arsenal confirm Emery appointment

Livescores

Arsenal have named former Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery as their new head coach.

Emery completed his two-year stint with PSG as a domestic treble winner this season, although he was unable to deliver the Champions League success the club's Qatari owners craved.

The 46-year-old enjoyed a superb spell in charge of Sevilla, winning the Europa League in three consecutive seasons from 2013-14 to 2015-16 – a competition Arsenal will enter once more next term after a sixth-place Premier League finish.

It marked an underwhelming end to Arsene Wenger's celebrated 22-year reign and one of Emery's primary tasks will be bringing Champions League football back to Emirates Stadium.

"I am thrilled to be joining one of the great clubs in the game," he said in a statement. "Arsenal is known and loved throughout the world for its style of play, its commitment to young players, the fantastic stadium, the way the club is run.

"I'm very excited to be given the responsibility to start this important new chapter in Arsenal’s history."

Emery's designation as head coach - as opposed to manager - is significant and indicates how the new man will fall into line within an Arsenal football structure that includes head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football relations Raul Sanllehi.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: "Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.

"His hard-working and passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward."

A host of names were heavily linked with becoming Wenger's successor, including former Arsenal captains Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira, as well as Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri and ex-Barcelona coach Luis Enrique.

But Gazidis felt Emery stood out during the recruitment process. No contract length has been confirmed by the club, but his terms are understood to run for two years with an option of a third.

"We conducted a confidential, wide-ranging and rigorous search involving extensive background references, data and video analysis, and personal meetings with all the candidates we shortlisted," Gazidis revealed.

"All were interested in the position and we were unanimous in our choice of Unai to drive the next chapter of our history."

Before his decorated spells at Sevilla and PSG, Emery was in charge of Almeria, Valencia and Spartak Moscow.

"I’m excited about what we can do together and I look forward to giving everyone who loves Arsenal some special moments and memories," Emery added.

Arsenal's majority owner Stan Kroenke said: "We’re delighted to welcome Unai to Arsenal. He’s a proven winner.

"We’re confident that he is the right person for the job and that he will work to deliver the triumphs our fans, staff and everyone who cares about Arsenal want."

World Cup winner Ray Wilson dies aged 83

Livescores

Former England and Everton left-back Ray Wilson has died aged 83.

Wilson was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2004 and passed away in Huddersfield on Tuesday.

He earned 63 caps for England and was part of the World Cup-winning side of 1966, adding to the FA Cup trophy he lifted with Everton that year.

Football Association chairman Greg Clarke said in a statement: "We are extremely saddened to hear the news about Ray Wilson.

"A wonderful player who was so well thought of across the game, Ray will forever be remembered for achieving a remarkable Wembley double in 1966.

"In one summer, he helped Everton win the FA Cup just weeks before being part of the England team that won the World Cup.

"A true great of English football, our thoughts are with his wife Pat, his family and friends."

Wilson's former England team-mate Bobby Charlton said: "Lady Norma and I are deeply saddened by the awful news that Ray has passed away.

"Ray was an excellent team-mate at international level for many years and a close friend. We shared some wonderful memories throughout our career and I had the pleasure of being his room-mate.

"Ray was a great man and he will be missed by so many people."

Wilson's former clubs Everton, Huddersfield Town, Oldham Athletic and Bradford City all paid tribute.

AFC Champions League Review: Hulk double fails to save Shanghai SIPG

Livescores

Hulk struck twice for Shanghai SIPG but it proved in vain as Kashima Antlers advanced to the AFC Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Protecting a 3-1 advantage from last week's home match, Kashima did enough to reach the last eight for the first time in a decade despite a 2-1 loss in Wednesday's return leg.

The Japanese side made a shaky start as Gen Shoji's error allowed Hulk to net the opener in just the seventh minute, although their nerves were eased by a precious Shoma Doi equaliser three minutes from half-time.

Shanghai were back within a goal when Hulk converted his second from the spot in the 81st minute - Shoji having been penalised for a handball - but the comeback came too late for Vitor Pereira's men as their wait for continental success continues.

Kashima are joined in the next round by Suwon Bluewings, who overturned a single-goal first-leg deficit against Ulsan Hyundai to advance 3-1 on aggregate.

Kim Gun-hee was the hero with two goals in the space of five first-half minutes, quickly following up his 26th-minute header by skilfully controlling and firing home Waguininho's knock-down.

Mislav Orsic had a golden chance to put Ulsan back in the driving seat when Kwak Kwang-seon shoved Richard Windbichler to the floor, but the Croatian striker's low penalty was pushed away by Shin Hwa-yong.

It was the last chance offered by Suwon as Waguininho grabbed one of his own in stoppage time, putting the seal on the two-time champions' impressive 3-0 win.

Everton appoint PSV's Brands as director of football

Livescores

Everton have appointed PSV's Marcel Brands as the club's new director of football, replacing Steve Walsh.

Walsh was recruited from Leicester City in 2016 but came under pressure after a £150million splurge on players such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, Michael Keane and Jordan Pickford failed to propel Everton into the Premier League's top six.

The Toffees struggled early in the season before Sam Allardyce - appointed following the sacking of Ronald Koeman - salvaged an eighth-place finish.

And Walsh has now, like Allardyce, been relieved of his duties, with Brands given the role following success with RKC Waalwijk, AZ and PSV in the Eredivisie.

Brands helped AZ win the Dutch top flight before playing a key role in PSV's three titles in the last four years.

"It is a privilege to be joining Everton as director of football and I am incredibly excited to take on this challenge," said Brands.

"The fantastic passion of the fans for their club, the magnificent history of the club over the years and the ambition and purpose we have as people tasked with driving the club forward all mean that we need to be competing for honours against the Premier League elite.

"It is no straightforward challenge but this must be our motivation each and every day.

"I am looking forward to working with [owner] Farhad Moshiri and Chairman Bill Kenwright, whom I thank for entrusting me with this role and responsibility, and I am also looking forward to working with the Board of Directors and with our new CEO, Denise Barrett-Baxendale. I know we have very committed people here who want only the best for Everton.

"It is only a challenge such as this which could have persuaded me to leave PSV where I am indebted to the many people whose collective effort led to some great achievements.

"Now we will look to build something really strong and lasting here at Everton."

Barrett-Baxendale added: "On behalf of the board and Mr Moshiri, I'd like to express our thanks to Steve Walsh, our first ever director of football, who has now left the club. We all wish Steve well for his future."

Chelsea hit with FA fine

Livescores

Chelsea have been fined £20,000 by the Football Association (FA) for failing to control their players during a 1-1 Premier League draw with Huddersfield Town this month.

Antonio Rudiger was among a group of players who vented their frustration at referee Lee Mason and his assistants when the whistle was blown for half-time before Chelsea could take a corner kick.

Marcos Alonso netted an equaliser for Chelsea after Laurent Depoitre had put Huddersfield in front - a result that preserved the Terriers' top-flight status and severely dented Chelsea's top-four aspirations.

An FA statement read: "Chelsea have been fined £20,000 after accepting a charge for failing to ensure their players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

"The incident occurred at half-time during the game against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday 9 May."

Chelsea ended the season in fifth, behind Liverpool, after losing 3-0 at Newcastle United on the final day.

Ramos ready to prove Madrid remain 'kings of Europe'

Livescores

Sergio Ramos says the Champions League final offers Real Madrid another opportunity to prove they are the undisputed "kings of Europe".

Madrid face Liverpool in Kiev on May 26, bidding to win an unprecedented third final in a row, having become the first side to claim back-to-back Champions League titles by beating Juventus in Cardiff last season.

It would also represent a fourth triumph in five years for Los Blancos, who go into the decider as favourites.

"For us, to have a new opportunity to show that we are the kings of Europe is always positive," said captain Ramos.

"It shows that, with hard work, sacrifice, effort and consistency over a long period of time, you can get rewarded and it will allow us to experience moments like this, in which we have the chance to play in another final and familiarise ourselves with what we have been doing over the past few seasons.

"We'll try to repay our fans and bring them happiness by winning the Champions League - winning it for the third year running would be a dream.

"Let's hope we can do it and bring the trophy that we want so badly home and celebrate with our people."

But midfielder Luka Modric has warned that Liverpool will be no pushovers following a run to the final that has included wins against Manchester City and Roma.

"Maybe they were not among the favourites at the beginning, but when you look at the games they played, I think they deserve to be in this final," added Modric.

"They have a good team, a good coach and we are expecting it to be a very difficult game, but we'll be prepared."

Hazard waiting for Chelsea signings before deciding on contract

Livescores

Eden Hazard has suggested his future at Chelsea could depend on the players the club sign before next season.

It is reported Stamford Bridge officials have been trying to persuade Hazard to commit his future to the club by signing a new contract worth in the region of £300,000 per week.

The Belgium international has not agreed to any new terms, though, prompting rumours he could be tempted to leave Chelsea in the transfer window, even though his current deal does not expire until 2020.

Real Madrid have been persistently linked with the 27-year-old, while Premier League champions Manchester City are also said to have considered making a bid for the former Lille man.

And Hazard has claimed his plans could be influenced by whether or not Chelsea recruit well in the coming weeks.

"I'm waiting for new players next season," said Hazard. "I want good players, because I want to win the Premier League next season."

Hazard is also aware that his next contract could be one of the last he signs during the prime of his career, adding: "That's why I'm taking my time. It's something big, so I need to think about a lot of things. But one thing is for sure: I'm happy here."

Chelsea have endured a tough second season under Antonio Conte, finishing fifth in the Premier League and therefore missing out on a Champions League place.

Hazard, though, insists he does not expect Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester United to be the last he plays for the club he joined in 2012.

"Like I've said many times before, I think the FA Cup final is not my last game for Chelsea," he said. "It's the last game of the season, that's it.

"After the World Cup, then we will be ready for the next season. But, for me in my mind, I'm here. I have one week to play now. Saturday is a massive game, I just want to win, for me and them also.

"We are Chelsea and we need a trophy at the end of the season and, at the moment, we have nothing. We have not qualified for the Champions League, so this season has been bad. Now we can save a little bit this season, with this trophy. So, we will give everything.

"It's always hard after you win the league. We saw that two years ago. This season was not good but you know – this is Chelsea. You never know what's happening. But, no, I think this year we dropped too many points at Stamford Bridge. In this condition you can't be in the top four, so it's up to us now to save the season with the FA Cup.

"We've had bad games, but also played a fantastic game against Liverpool recently, so I hope for Saturday the boys will be ready like we were against Liverpool last week. If we play all together, we can do something, especially against Manchester United."

Everton dismiss ex-England boss Allardyce

Livescores

Everton have parted company with Sam Allardyce despite the former England manager having another year left to run on his contract at Goodison Park.

Allardyce was appointed as successor to Ronald Koeman on and 18-month deal last November, with an immediate brief of guiding Everton away from relegation danger.

That was accomplished soon enough, but a significant section of the Merseyside club's fanbase have become disgruntled with a perceived negative style of football under the 63-year-old former England boss.

Despite leading Everton to an eighth-place finish, Allardyce's widely anticipated departure was confirmed on Wednesday.

Everton chief executive professor Denise Barrett-Baxendale said: "On behalf of the chairman, board of directors and [Everton owner Farhad] Moshiri, I'd like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton over the last seven months.

"Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with some stability and we are grateful to him for doing that.

"However, we have made the decision that, as part of our longer-term plan, we will be appointing a new manager this summer and will be commencing this process immediately.

"Again, we'd like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sam for his work with us over the last few months and wish him well for the future."

Marco Silva is thought to be the frontrunner for the Everton post once more, despite their approach for the then-Watford boss last year causing acrimony between the two clubs and preceding the Portuguese coach's departure from Vicarage Road.

Everton announced a major restructuring of their board on Tuesday, including Barrett-Baxendale's appointment to succeed Robert Elstone.

Speaking to the Mirror at the League Managers Association annual awards, Allardyce made his anger at not being informed of those decisions known and suggested the writing was on the wall regarding his own future.

"I'm shocked, disappointed and disgusted that the football club didn't have the decency to tell me, my director of football and my staff about the changes," he said.

"They must have been in the pipeline for a considerable time but no-one thought to tell me and my staff. I'm pretty disgusted.

"I came into the football club with the team struggling and we have finished eighth in the table. I'm more than happy with what myself, my staff and the players have achieved from when I came in.

"I will be meeting Farhad on Wednesday morning to discuss what happens next but I'm not expecting a long meeting."

Ex-Manchester United boss Moyes leaves West Ham

Livescores

David Moyes has left West Ham following the end of his short-term contract as manager, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes was appointed until the end of this season last November, following a dreadful start to the campaign under predecessor Slaven Bilic.

West Ham secured their top-flight status with two games to spare thanks to a 2-0 win at Leicester City, but Moyes has presided over a fraught time at the club.

Supporters' unhappiness with West Ham's board has been evident since the club moved to London Stadium and those frustrations spilled over in unseemly fashion when some fans invaded the field and tried to storm the directors' box during a 3-0 home defeat against Burnley in March.

West Ham's joint-chairman David Sullivan – a target for plenty of that ire – thanked Moyes for keeping the team in the top flight and promised a "high-calibre" figure as his replacement.

"I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to David Moyes and his staff for achieving the target of keeping West Ham United in the Premier League," said Sullivan in a statement that also confirmed Moyes' assistants Alan Irvine, Stuart Pearce and Billy McKinley would leave the club.

"Throughout his time here, David has carried himself with dignity and honesty and we have all found him to be a pleasure to work with. He, Alan, Stuart and Billy accepted the challenge and attacked it head on, turning around a difficult situation. They deserve great respect for the job they have done and they leave the club with our best wishes.

"When David and his team arrived, it was the wish of both parties that the focus be only on the six months until the end of the season, at which point a decision would be made with regards to the future. Having taken stock of the situation and reflected now the campaign is complete, we feel that it is right to move in a different direction.

"We are already taking steps to identify and recruit the manager we believe can take West Ham United forward in line with our ambitions. We aim to appoint a high-calibre figure who we feel will lead the club into an exciting future for our loyal supporters within the next 10 days."

Moyes signed a six-year contract after leaving Everton for Manchester United in 2013 but was sacked in April 2014, with the then-reigning Premier League champions heading for a seventh-place finish.

He went on to manage Real Sociedad and Sunderland before taking the reins at West Ham. None of the 55-year-old Scot's jobs since an 11-year stint at Goodison Park have lasted longer than 12 months.

Fayose’s deputy, Olusola, wins PDP gov primary

punchng.com

The Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, has emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the July 14 governorship election.

Olusola, an indigene of Ikere Ekiti in the South senatorial district of the state, was the preferred candidate of Governor Ayodele Fayose.

He polled 1,191 to defeat a former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, in the keenly contested primary.

Adeyeye, who is also a former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee, scored 770 while seven votes were voided.

The third aspirant and Senator representing Ekiti South, Abiodun Olujimi, had earlier stepped down for Adeyeye.

Olujimi, whose action attracted a loud applause, said she decided to collapse her structure for Adeyeye for peace, progress and stability of the party.

She urged her supporters to cast their votes for Adeyeye as the preferred candidate for the July 14 governorship election.

No fewer than 1, 968 delegates were accredited for voting. Voting commenced at 2:10 pm under a tight security.

Journalists and others were screened by fierce-looking policemen stationed at the gates.

After voting, Olujimi expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the primary.

She commended the chairman of the election committee and Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for bringing experience to bear on the primary.

She said, “The process is well arranged; you know Governor Okowa is a veteran. We are pleased that there is a very wide opportunity for transparency. We will be pleased with the result because we have done our best.

Giving reasons for stepping down for Adeyeye, she said, “We had a party where we didn’t have a voice, where everything was lorded over us.

“We needed to take the party back to the people and the only way we can do this is not to have an anointed candidate.”

Asked if she would support the “anointed” if he wins, she replied, “If the anointed wins, I will review my seat

Governor Fayose commended the election’s committee for doing a good job. He also commended Adeyeye and Olujimi for their spirit of sportsmanship.

He said, “I appreciate God and thank the committee for doing a good job. I thank Prince Adeyeye and Senator Olujimi for their courage.

“In journeys like this, there would be a divide. They are leaders of the party irrespective of what has happened before this primary.

“They should join hands with the party to win the ultimate, which is the July 14 election. I commend all the delegates for exercising their civic right.

“I will reach out to Prince Adeyeye and Senator Olujimi and personally visit them. I appeal to them in the overall interest of the party to work for our common goal.”

Fayose urged all the political parties to emulate the PDP in organising a peaceful, credible, free and fair primary.

He mocked the All Progressives Congress for not conducting a successful primary.

“They should come and learn from Governor Okowa. They can’t even conduct an election among themselves; they will still beat themselves again.”

Okowa commended Adeyeye, who had left before the official declaration of the results, for his spirit of sportsmanship.

He said Adeyeye had told him of his acceptance of the results before leaving.

Speaking with journalists earlier, Adeyeye said he was satisfied with the conduct of the primary.

He said, “I’m satisfied the whole exercise has been fair, free and transparent. Whoever wins, we would join hands together.”

Saraki, Magu meet at EFCC’s N24b office complex in Abuja

thenationonline

Senate President Bukola Saraki met face to face with Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu in Abuja.

It was at the N24billion newly completed office complex of the anti-graft agency which Saraki inspected for about 40 minutes.

The handshake between the two men elicited thunderous applause from dignitaries, EFCC and construction giant Julius Berger Plc officlas on hand so much so that the Senate President allowed the plea of those who missed the photgraph, for another round of snapshots.

There is no love lost between the two men. The Senate has twice refused to clear Magu to become the substantive chairman of the EFCC.

This is in spite of the push by the Presidency whose insistence, has now made the Senate to abandon the clearance of many officials whose nominations are pending.

The Senate President is also facing trial over alleged false assets declaration.

But yesterday, Saraki said the war against corruption is not personal, adding that it should be everybody’s business.

He said: “If we are going to build a better society in our country, one of the main things we must tackle is the issue of corruption and how we can do that is by strengthening these institutions.

“My presence here is to say that whatever we do in our job, the most important thing is that we all represent institutions and we must work and see that it is in the interest of the country.

“So my presence here is, after a building like this where the National Assembly has played a great role, it must be my responsibility to see how the money was spent and I can see that that has been done properly and we should continue to work together to see that goes well for the entire country.

“I think we have all said it. It is something we must fight. There is no way you can build a society without fighting corruption.

“I have always said that my own strong will is that as we fight it, we must fight it in ensuring that we strengthen the institutions and what you see here is part of the process of strengthening those institutions so that whoever comes here will know that this is what we must fight if we want to build institutions.

“I think it (project) has gone through about three executive chairmen and one did not come in to say this is not my project and I must not continue. Each one has taken it as his own project.  I think that is good and that is the whole point that is important and this is something we will be proud of for many years.

“In many years to come, I hope that we don’t have corruption in an environment like this but for now, I think there are many good aspects of this. Having a Nigerian that designed this, the details are very impressive-  the clinic  and all the facilities- and the fact that it has gone through three different administration and the fact that the National Assembly has played its role and brought it to completion, I think that it is a lot of plus.”

APC holds fresh Ekiti primary Friday, Tinubu, Akande, Osoba meet aspirants

punchng.com

The All Progressives Congress has cancelled last Saturday’s Ekiti governorship primary election and ordered that a fresh one should be held on Friday.

This was the outcome of a marathon meeting of the National Working Committee of the party, which was held late on Monday and ended on Tuesday.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, announced the party’s decision at a press briefing at the party’s National Secretariat, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He told newsmen that the party considered the report submitted to it by the Governor Tanko Al-Makura-led panel sent to conduct the exercise.

Abdullahi also announced that the agents of the aspirants identified as perpetrators of the violence which led to the disruption of the exercise had been disqualified from taking part in the fresh exercise.

He said, “Perhaps, more importantly, is that the exercise of Saturday is cancelled and would now be conducted this Friday, 11th of May, 2018.”

In a response to a question on whether a new panel would be set up to conduct the exercise on the new date, he said, “The existing primary election committee is maintained, except the secretary, who will now be substituted.”

Abdullahi, however, explained that the committee’s secretary was not dropped as a result of any infraction.

He said, “Virtually all the aspirants complained that the secretary has a close relationship with one of their colleagues and so we decided to drop him in order to guard the integrity of the process and not because he was found to have compromised.”

On the ban on agents, Abdullahi said, “All identified unruly agents that participated in the suspended primary election of May 5, 2018, are disqualified from participating in the rescheduled primary as agents.

“Accordingly, the following individuals are hereby disqualified from participating as agents or partaking in the rescheduled primary in whatever capacity: Ayodeji Omowaye, Rotimi Faleye, Kayode Afolabi, Oladele Ademola Samuel, Oyetunde Ojo, Akintade Olayisade and Temitope Adewumi.

“All agent tags must bear the names of the aspirants they represent. All the agents in the rescheduled primary election are hereby barred from coming to the voting arena with their mobile phones.”

Meanwhile, some South-West chieftains of the APC under the leadership of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, held a meeting with the Ekiti State APC governorship aspirants in a bid to seek a common ground on the rescheduled party primary election.

The meeting was held behind closed doors at the Lagos State Government Lodge Annex in Abuja on Tuesday night.

The meeting started about 4pm with more than 30 of the 33 aspirants present.

It was gathered that the meeting was part of the efforts by the party leaders from the zone to broker peace and find a way forward after the botched party primary in Ekiti.

After the first round of talks which lasted for more than two hours, Chief Bisi Akande stepped out of the hall of the meeting closely followed by Tinubu.

When approached by newsmen for comments, Akande said the party leaders were mandated by the aspirants to meet and come back with a decision.

He said, “We (leaders) were asked to go and meet and come up with a decision…”

In response to a question whether a consensus candidate was to be expected, he said, “I cannot tell you that…”

Soon after,  Asiwaju held him by the hand and told reporters, “We are going for  (a) caucus (meeting), we will get back to you.”

A source privy to the meeting had earlier informed The PUNCH that the meeting, which was scheduled for 2:00 pm, was shifted to 4:00 pm because some of those expected for the meeting were held up at the Akure Airport.

One of the aspirants, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, however, left the venue of the meeting before the commencement of the second round.

Although he did not speak to reporters, another aspirant, Segun Oni, dismissed insinuations that Fayemi walked out of the meeting.

In response to a question whether Fayemi walked out of the meeting, Oni said, “Nobody walked out. We met and asked our leaders to go and meet and take a decision which we will abide by.”

The meeting was still on as at the time of filing this report at 8:09 pm.

Those who attended the meeting included: Tinubu, former Ogun State Governor, Aremo Segun Osoba, former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, and the chairman of the panel responsible for the Congress, Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura and most of the 33 aspirants.

Nigeria mulls extra year of studies for graduates before NYSC

Premium Times Nigeria

File photo of Graduates of Fountain University

Nigeria is considering a major policy change to its tertiary education that would see graduates go for an extra year of studies.

The Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwukah, disclosed this on Tuesday at a two-day retreat for governing councils of federal universities in Abuja.

The retreat, held under the theme ‘Elements of Statutory Governance, Procurement and Financial Accounting in Nigerian Universities,’ is to address the challenges of the education sector.

Mr Anwukah said this was being considered because many university graduates were not good enough to be employed by industries.

He said the proposal was similar to the extra year currently being undertaken by law and medical students.

“Law students attend Law School for one year before going for NYSC and medical students go for one year Housemanship before they are allowed to practice fully, so it will be necessary for other courses to also go through this process,” Mr Anwukah said.

“The Lagos Business School can also serve as a one year after-school training,” he added.

Mr Anwukah said the university system has let Nigeria down in the country’s quest for industrial development. He said the universities have failed to produce graduates that meet the needs of the industries.

“The universities are producing products that are not matching the needs of the industries. I urged the Committee of Pro-chancellors and Committee of Vice-Chancellor to end the decline in the standard of education,” he said.

He lamented that the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) system has failed in the universities.

SIWES, established in 1974 by the Nigerian government, is a programme of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). It is designed to give Nigerian students studying occupationally –related courses in higher institutions the experience that would supplement their theoretical learning.

But according to the minister, “the project is not working” and remains a major problem for the university system.

Ayo Banjo, the Chairman of the Governing Board of Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), said the university system must be well-funded before it can achieve high ranking and fulfill its mandate.

“There must be inflow of internally-generated revenue. Pro-chancellors need to think of business that can generate income internally for the revenue of the universities. Unlike pure water and bread, universities should venture into agriculture and real estate”, he said.

He said the governing councils must ensure that best practices are followed in accountability of resources.

According to him, the first university in Nigeria will be 70 years this year, so the university system in the country can still be regarded to be in its infancy.

He said Nigerian universities, except the private ones, have no meaningful academic calendar, although he noted that there are strenuous effort by the universities to appear on global ranking.

The Executive Secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed, said the major problems in universities can be traced to bad governance.

“The retreat is coming at a time when NUC is embarking on reforming universities in Nigeria,” he said.

Ibrahim Njodi, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Maiduguri and representative of Committee of Vice-chancellors, said the retreat will examine a better way for policy implementation.

“We must say the education sector has been experiencing issues but this government means well for the sector,” he said.

The NUC was established to promote quality higher education in Nigeria.

Never in Nigeria’s history has a VP reduced himself as Osinbajo’s done – Reno

Vanguard News

Let me start this statement by thanking Vice President Osinbajo for his attempt at responding to my last statement calling on him to substantiate his allegations that three persons under the Jonathan administration stole $3 billion from the public till.

However, even the Vice President’s statement has vindicated my earlier assertion that he had lied.

To refresh the memory of Nigerians and the international community, while speaking at The Platform, a programme organised by the Covenant Christian Centre, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo alleged that three individuals stole $3 billion under the Jonathan administration.

Reno Omokri and Osinbajo

When challenged to provide proof, the Vice President went on to identify those three individuals as Messrs Jide Omokore, Kola Aluko and the former Petroleum Resources Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

He then went ahead to cite a commercial transaction, saying inter alia that “the companies of both Jide Omokore and Kola Aluko lifted Nigerian crude oil and kept the proceeds. The total sums converted is in excess of three billion dollars including royalties, taxes and fees unpaid for the asset from which the crude was taken.”

It goes without saying that both Mr. Jide Omokore and Kola Aluko were not members of the Jonathan cabinet neither did they hold any government office or position. These were private businessmen who had dealings with various corporations and whose dealings are the subject of litigation.

Yes, Diezani Alison-Madueke was a member of the Jonathan cabinet, yes, allegations and charges have been brought against her, however, she challenges these allegations and is ready to have her day in court, but no-where has she ever been accused of stealing $3 billion.

She has also never been convicted by any court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria or any country in the world.

It is funny that an administration that illegally withdrew $496 million from the Excess Crude Account without due process, allegedly to pay for 12 Super Tocano jets is accusing the Jonathan administration of illegal withdrawals.

Nigerians and the international community are aware that the illegal withdrawal by the Buhari government triggered an impeachment attempt against the President at the Senate of the National Assembly which is still raising dust.

According to the world’s premier aviation intelligence agency, Flight Global, the cost of a Super Tocano aircraft is $10 million. Rather than make false allegations against the Jonathan government, the Buhari administration should rather tell Nigerians why an aircraft that is sold for $10 million each is costing Nigeria almost $40 million each?

In November 2017, Afghanistan bought 6 A-29 Super Tucanos at a total cost of $174.5 million, a price tag which included aircraft transportation, maintenance spares and advanced sensors. Why is Nigeria paying $496 million for 12 of the same aircrafts?

The excuse given by the Buhari administration that it had to make haste and pay for the Super Tocano jets because of the anti-terror war does not make sense since the US has announced that the jets would not be ready until the year 2020. What is the hurry to pay for 2020 planes to fight a 2018 problem?

The $496m Super Tocano scandal follows a pattern of alleged corrupt behaviour by the Buhari administration that has seen it spend $25 billion on contracts at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation without due process, return, reinstate and double promote Nigeria’s biggest ever alleged thieving civil servant, Abdulrasheed Maina, reinstatement of the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme who was indicted for corrupt practices against the advice of the minister of health, non-prosecution of Buhari cronies caught red handed in corruption such as former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal, etc.

Also, when Vice President Osinbajo says “These cases of grand corruption and open looting of public resources pauperized Nigeria and left us with little or no savings“, he has forgotten that on October 28, 2017, he himself (Vice President Osinbajo) said “When we came in, we had a foreign reserve of $32 billion”.

If indeed former President Jonathan left the Buhari administration with “with little or no savings”, then from whom did they inherit the $32 billion in foreign reserves that the Vice President admitted to at the ‘Greater Nigeria Pastors Conference’ organised by the Berean Ministers Group?

Vice President Osinbajo is also challenged to boldly tell Nigerians how much was left by the Jonathan administration in the Sovereign Wealth Fund which the Jonathan government set up. While doing that, can he also tell Nigerians how much the Buhari administration met in the coffers of the Nigerian Liquified Natural Company’s account to be inherited by the incoming government.

The truth is that no matter how far and fast falsehood has traveled, it must eventually be overtaken by truth and this time, the truth emerged from the mouth of the accuser, albeit, in a Freudian slip.

Again, the Vice President tried to set the former coordinating minister for the economy and minister of finance, Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, against former President Jonathan, by alleging that she had accused the Jonathan administration of corruption. Obviously, Professor Osinbajo has not read ‘Fighting Corruption Is Dangerous: The Story Behind the Headlines’.

If the Vice President had indeed read that book, he would have noticed that Dr. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala did not mince words in describing the Buhari administration as a clueless government stacked with corrupt people who have no capacity to lead Nigeria.

Is Vice President Osinbajo so jobless that he has reduced himself and his office to being the spokesperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission? Even the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has conducted himself with more dignity than the Vice President and is allowing the agencies charged by law to fight corruption to do their jobs.

Finally, I advise Vice President Osinbajo to focus on responding to the #BuhariChallenge and inform Nigerians of even one project that the Buhari administration has initiated, started and completed in three years.

Time for Jose Mourinho and Man United to spend big and stop the depth excuses

ESPN

play

Looking at Manchester United's place in the Premier League table, one statistic stands out. Though they are second in the division, they are some way behind the champions Manchester City and third-placed Liverpool in goals scored -- City have 102, Liverpool 80 and United 67. This number is pertinent because United have an odd problem -- in recent months they have managed to defeat several close rivals but have lost to those at the bottom of the division.

Those losses have generally come when Jose Mourinho has fielded some of the less regular starters in his squad, suggesting that he has problems with the strength in depth of his personnel. Following United's 1-0 loss to Brighton, Mourinho noted that perhaps his players were not individually as talented as critics thought. The further question, then, is why?

Mourinho should be disappointed with the team's showing against Brighton. Though it was a late-season game with little riding on the result -- his team had virtually sealed second place in the division -- United may have been expected to pose more threat than they did. Though Brighton's defence was less generous than most of those at the foot of the table -- having conceded 47 times in 36 games -- United's attacking was slow for most of the game, picking up tempo in only the last 35 minutes or so.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford came in for much criticism after the game, whilst Paul Pogba's passing was unfortunately as poor as it has been all season, but their underperformance was part of a wider problem. For one thing, United started the game with one full-back -- Ashley Young -- who rarely played the ball down the line, instead squaring it to his central midfielders and centre-backs. This had the combined effect of not only inhibiting United's speed on the break but also putting pressure on the defence and goalkeeper. Meanwhile, United's other full-back, Matteo Darmian, was even more conservative than usual in his movement and passing, meaning there was no overlapping to speak of. Given that Juan Mata was playing effectively as a right-winger, there was no pace down the United right. The two men in attack, Martial and Rashford, thus suffered from a lack of support.

Mourinho, though, was unsympathetic to their plight, and this is the core of the issue. Ultimately, he admires players who fend for themselves, which is why he spoke with such praise of Romelu Lukaku after the defeat. Lukaku is a player to whose strengths United play far less than they should -- they put relatively few crosses on his forehead and are not always quick to play the ball ahead of him into space -- but, by adapting his game, he has managed to succeed to a significant degree. Jesse Lingard is another who has thrived under Mourinho, and Rio Ferdinand's remarks about Lingard recently were revealing -- the former defender said that there was no one else in the England squad as good as him at playing fast one-touch football on the go in the final third.

What Lukaku and Lingard share is the utmost efficiency, the ability to thrive despite limited supply. This is a characteristic they share with the newest recruit, Alexis Sanchez, and it is no coincidence that they have become features in the team that Mourinho is slowly building. It is worth noting, too, that the victories over major teams -- City away, Liverpool at home, Arsenal away -- were achieved with a surprisingly small number of shots on target. Mourinho is building a team of smash-and-grab footballers, and though Rashford has proved he can be one of these -- witness, for example, his supreme efficiency against Liverpool in the 2-1 victory at Old Trafford -- Martial, in recent months, has not.

Here is the rub, then -- if these players are not as good as Mourinho would like, then he needs to do some heavy recruiting. He should therefore be roundly judged on the business he does this summer, and if he is indeed so dissatisfied with his options, then he must bring in more than four players, and more like five or six. If United's players are not as good as the public think they are, then ultimately -- given that he has huge resources at his disposal -- that is on him, as two of his signings, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Victor Lindelof, were flops this season.

This is a season which has seen City streak ahead and Liverpool show signs of a renaissance at league level. To keep pace, Mourinho must continue to focus upon building the rest of his squad. Specifically, that means adding two new full-backs, a new centre-back, a new central midfielder and at least one attacker.

Each of these players, more to the point, must not require substantial periods of adjustment and must not require complex attacking systems in which to flourish. We know this, because these are the standards that Mourinho has set himself, in both word and deed. If the conversation persists a year from now -- that United are underperforming because their supporting cast are simply not good enough -- then, for Mourinho, the reasons for that will be uncomfortably close to home.

LIVERPOOL FLIRTING WITH DISASTER OF MISSING OUT ON CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION

Goal.com

Victory over Brighton would see the Reds home - but failure to seal top-four finish would be the nightmare scenario in more ways than one.

For the second season running, Liverpool’s campaign looks like it will go down to the wire. The fear will be palpable; the worry, the what-ifs will be everywhere. After losing 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, it won’t be a comfortable week.

“That’s my life, eh?” said Jurgen Klopp, forcing a smile. “Always to the last matchday!”

The Reds boss knows that their Premier League season should be done and dusted by now. He knows his side should have closed the door on Chelsea and Tottenham long ago, and that they should be able to focus all their attention on Real Madrid and their forthcoming Champions League final.

Instead they have, in Klopp’s words, “one more final” to prepare for at the weekend. And losing it doesn’t bear thinking about.

There will be tension in the air at Anfield when Brighton and Hove Albion visit next Sunday, and understandably so. Were Liverpool to miss out on a top-four spot now, after the season they’ve had, after all the progress and the positive headlines, it would leave them in a nightmare scenario; having to win the Champions League in order to qualify for it. No pressure.

They should not find themselves in that position, of course. Liverpool are unbeaten at Anfield this season. Brighton are the team with the second-worst away record in the Premier League, two wins and just 11 points from 17 games so far. Chris Hughton's side secured survival by beating Manchester United on Friday; they don’t have to get a result this weekend.

And yet. And yet.

What if?

What if Liverpool don’t win? What if Brighton do what Stoke did, and grind out a scoreless draw? What if Chelsea take six points from their last two games, and Tottenham win one of theirs? What if everything that could go wrong, does go wrong? What then?

Liverpool’s Champions League journey this season has thrilled, but it began with an identical scenario on the final day of the last campaign. Then, they had to beat Middlesbrough to secure fourth spot. They did it, comfortably.

“I’m sure I will watch that game at some point,” Klopp grinned during his post-match press conference at Stamford Bridge. His team will draw on the experience, and others; they've delivered when it mattered on more than one occasion this season.

Klopp hid it well, but his side's form of late will concern him. Liverpool have looked like a team affected by their European exertions and their full-throttle style. Injuries have stretched their squad at a critical time. They were home and dry a month ago, looking at overhauling United for second spot; since then they’ve taken six points from a possible 15 to leave the trap-door open beneath them.

It’s worrying, make no mistake. Liverpool sacrificed points at Everton, squandered them at West Brom, couldn’t prise them out of Stoke’s hands and were beaten to them by Chelsea.

Klopp insists fatigue is not an issue – “I didn’t think Chelsea looked much fresher than we did,” he said after Sunday’s game, in which his side had more than 68 per cent possession away from home – but there’s no question that his side have dropped their level of late. They look leggier, they look less dangerous and more predictable. Even the brilliant Mohamed Salah has suffered; the goal machine has now gone three games without scoring.

The good news is they have a full week to prepare for Brighton. “That will help us massively,” Klopp said. “The intense period is over.”

It is, but the critical one is starting. If failure to beat Middlesbrough would have been disastrous, then missing out this time around would be even worse. Liverpool have had a taste of the Champions League and loved it; the idea of watching it from their sofas next season, of Europa League Thursdays in Warsaw or Bucharest or Bratislava, is simply terrifying.

It would undermine the progress made during the past two seasons, affect the club’s summer transfer plans and place unnecessary extra pressure on what should be an enjoyable occasion in Kiev. It would open up the questions about spending and recruitment, about depth and quality and Coutinho and ambition. Liverpool, whose curve has been upwards and whose message has been positive, could do without all that.

The good news is it’s still in their hands. Had you offered Liverpool a scenario where a home win against Brighton would qualify them for next season's Champions League back in August, most would have taken it. Now, Klopp and his side must take it.

They stood firm and passed the test 12 months ago; it is even more vital that they do so this time. If they don’t, it could set them back years.

What Buhari told me about APC congress nationwide – Okorocha

Rochas and Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday in Daura, Katsina State, met behind closed doors with Governors Rochas Okorocha of Imo and Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara.

The president’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, confirmed this development on his Twitter handle on Sunday.

He posted: “President Muhammadu Buhari this evening received chairman of the Progressives Governors‘Forum (PGF), Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo.’’

Mr Okorocha, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, said that he updated the president on the outcome of the ward congresses conducted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country.

He frowned at the way some members of the party in some states conducted themselves during the exercise, saying the party would check such incidents in future.

Mr Okorocha said: “We expect internal democracy and internal democracy is the way to go. Those kind of funny politics that were played must stop, where people want to carry ballot boxes, steal results looks so primitive.

“I intimated Mr President and we will make sure that such things must stop.’’

On the president’s response, the governor said; “He spoke like the president and he will take the necessary steps to correct this in our party, APC, not just in Imo but across the whole nation, to make sure that there is respect for internal democracy.”

However, Mr Yari, who spoke on the outcome of the ward congresses, said the exercise went well in the North-west region.

He said; “You know in a democracy you cannot expect everything to work 100 per cent.

“But in our region from the information available to us, everything went well in Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kano, where people expected that there may be a problem, the exercise was successful.

“But anybody that has complain, there is a committee set up by the national executive of the party, they should take their complains there so that they will be attended to.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that mixed reactions characterised the outcome of the APC ward congresses across the country.

In Delta, the exercise was bloody as the Police Command in the state confirmed that a chairmanship candidate died in the APC ward congresses in Ughelli South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Andrew Aniamaka, said Jeremiah Oghoveta, was stabbed to death during the exercise at Jeremi Ward 3, Okwagbe.

The ward congresses in Adamawa and Oyo states were conducted on May 6 as against May 5 following political misunderstandings among top APC members and stakeholders in the states.

In Adamawa, mixed reactions characterized the conduct of the ward congresses on Sunday.

While the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustafa, said the exercise was smooth and hitch free, Nuhu Ribadu said the exercise was not conducted in his Ward of Bako in Yola.

Mr Mustafa participated in the exercise in his Ward at Gwadabawa in Jimeta area of Yola.

NAN also reported that a faction of the APC in Kebbi State had staged a peaceful protest to the party Secretariat in Birnin Kebbi against consensus arrangement during the Saturday Congress held across 225 wards in the State.

The protesters were seen carrying placards with different inscriptions like: `Kebbi APC Congress no consensus’; `We need true party Congress not consensus’;`We say no to injustice.’

The leader of the aggrieved members, Adamu Gulma, told journalists at the APC secretariat that ” what happened in Kebbi State is not congress but government and major APC stakeholders hijacked the event to their advantage.”

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ondo State chapter had commended the peaceful conduct of ward congress, held across 203 wards of the state on Saturday.

Abayomi Adesanya, the spokesman of the party in the state, told NAN that the reports he got from various wards were good.

NAN also observed that the ward congresses were successfully conducted in many states of the federation including Lagos, Kaduna, Gombe, Ogun, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, Borno, and Yobe.

Meanwhile, the party had on Sunday called on its members that may have been aggrieved following the conduct of its Saturday ward congress across the country to seek redress in its appeal panel.

Bolaji Abudulahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made the call in a statement in Abuja.

He, however, congratulated all members of the party, saying that the conduct of the congress was generally peaceful.
